Free Music Notes for Bach - Brandenburg Concertos / Rousset, AAM, HogwoodFree Music Review: excellent performance a different view Hit: 4 Starsthis is an interesting performance of the concertoes. although the tempo may be a little fast at times and though i prefer the expanded harpsichord version of the fifth concerto, i still recommend this recording in that it brings out the baroque qualities of these works in ways that other recording never do. the part playing is very fine, partially due to the recording process... highly recommended to those who already own a good conventional recording of the work
Free Music Review: Still the Best! Hit: 4 StarsI own three versions of this recording and by far, this one's my favorite. Although the 1985 digital sound quality is not top notch, Hogwood's stunning performance surely is! The authentic instruments give the music a live quality that you don't always hear in Baroque music, and you can't beat two CD's for the price of one. Now I want to investigate much more of Hogwood's Academy of Ancient Music!
Free Music Review: Beautiful Hit: 5 StarsI was surprised by the negative review. This is one of my favorite cds of any work, period. One of my 10 deserted island picks, actually.Do yourself a favor and get this now. Anything from the Academy is a great choice, to me anyway.
Free Music Review: I felt cheated. Hit: 1 StarsSorry, but I hated this cd. While it's true that I have a large cd collection, still, there's only room in it for one version of each work. This should not be your first or your only version of the Brandenburgs. If you want to study Bach, and are interested in every possible permutation of his compositions, then, fine, buy this disc. For the ordinary collector, it is not suitable. I feel cheated because when I bought this cd there was certainly no indication on the packaging that this is a variant version of the concertos. Had I had the information contained in the liner notes when I was trying to decide whether to purchase it, I would not have. I have no problem with the use of authentic instruments, and I ordinarily enjoy Hogwood's and the AAM's recordings, but this is not the normal, traditional version of the Brandenburg Concertos, the sound quality [was not good], the playing is abrasive, and I frankly think that anyone who, like me, loves classical music but is no expert, will just find listening to this cd an ordeal. Don't buy it; if you are really intrigued, at least try listening to it before you plunk down your cash.
Free Music Review: best performance I know of the 2nd Hit: 5 StarsI have to object, and offer a second opinion of the performance of the 2nd concerto.(...) [A] reviewer points to Friedmann Immer's "weak" performance of the trumpet part to the 2nd as the only major flaw in execution on this set. Don't listen to him. I'm familiar with over a dozen recordings of the 2nd Brandenburg, and Friedmann Immer's delivery of the solo trumpet part here is a revelation, head and shoulders above any other I've heard. It's true that Immer plays with a soft, delicate tone. At no point is he any louder than the Baroque flute player, in fact. But that is not because his performance is "weak." That's what a Baroque trumpet sounds - and sounded - like; it's what Bach had in mind. This is not a Trumpet Concerto, it's a concerto for a group of four soloists. Very few trumpeters realize this in their performances of the piece, and of those who do acheive the right balance with the other soloists, Immer's reading stands apart. His lip trills are immaculte, his intonation impeccable, and he soars through the highest passages - including a series of arpeggios up to g''', a damnably difficult range to play tastefully on the trumpet - gracefully, if you can believe it. But this set with confidence: all of the works here receive elegant, polished performances. And look forward especially to the 2nd, which receives the most thoughtful, refined reading I know of.
