These four cantatas from Bach's late Weimar period, were written for important feast days during Advent, Christmas and Pentecost. They are among the most exuberant and sparkling of all Bach's works in this genre. If you want a CD filled with joyous Baroque works, or if you are looking for an entree to Bach's choral works, this would be a terrific place to start. The performances from this remarkable Japanese group are wonderful, and BIS has done them justice in every way. This is genuinely uplifting music, regardless of whatever belief, if any, you subscribe to.

BIS apparently didn't program this volume of the BCJ's Bach cantata series as a holiday item, but with two cantatas each for Advent and Christmas, it will do nicely. The two Christmas cantatas (especially in their opening and closing choruses) are lusty trumpet-and-drum celebrations--yet with all the dignity and complexity you'd expect from Bach--and they get a lusty performance from the BCJ. The Advent cantatas balance penitent gravitas with hopeful anticipation. The choir, orchestra, and soloists are excellent--especially delightful soprano Ingrid Schmith?sen. --Matthew WestphalClassical Music CDs
