Free Music Review: Probably the best Casals transfer on the market

This is likely the best CD transfer of Bach's Cello Suites with Casals. The sound is fresh and enjoyable. I have the later EMI transfer (EMI 562611-2) and an earlier transfer of the G major Suite BWV 1007 on EMI 567008. Above it, I have Casals on LPs in a good condition. The Opus Kura offers the best and most trustworthy sound from all these variants. I have not heard the Naxos issue of Casals' Suites, but I have another vintage reissues (including Feuermann) on this label and can confirm that Naxos transfers usually provide exactly that effect Mr.Get-Real spoke of in his excellent review: the sound comes as from a remote distance, there is noise reduction and (alas) frequency filtering. Opus Kura fortunately does not apply to the latter and gives a more vivid and natural sound.
The liner notes to the Opus Kura CD-set include some comments by Mr. Hidemi Suzuki who is a baroque cellist. I don't think that the fans of Casals and other greats from the past need to share Suzuki's views about Casals' art, but his judgments about the quality of the transfers are reasonable. He claims that Suites Nos. 1-2 have the most impressive sound, while No.3 & 6 have the worst sound. I think that is true to fact.
Highly recommended for people who are looking for best transfers available. I also recommend Opus Kura's reissues of Matthaeus-Passion with Mengelberg, Beethoven's 9th Symphony with Weingartner, Huberman's and Feuermann's solo CDs - all of them sound better than elsewhere.
