I am surely hesitate to criticize an artist of the sheer accomplishment of this violinist and perhaps the criticism is not of him anyway. But the fact is that I found the tone of the violin used on these peices to be harsh, metallic and grating. This was particulary true in the double stopped portions of the Chaccone, which became painful for me to listen to. The playback equipment was a Sony SACD player, a Yamaha integrated amp, Revel bookshelf speakers or Sennheiser wireless headphones - not audiophile but good equipment.
I don't know if the problem is in the new violin, the playing or the recording engineering but there is a problem here. If you don't believe it, listen to the Julia Fischer Pentatone recording of the same pieces. The pity is that Tetzlaff is really a fine player and has some interesting things to say in the parts of the pieces that are not afflicted by this nail scratch on blackboard sound. I have not heard any of the top violinists play this piece live so I certainly cannot render any critical judgement on Christian Tetzlaff himself, only on the experience of listening to this recording.
Certainly, if you were to buy only one recording of the Bach Partitas and Sonotas this should not be it. On the other hand, if you have quite a few recordings, there are some good things to hear once you get past the tone. But it is hard to get past, at least for me.
