Free Music Notes for Bach ConcertosFree Music Review: Bach Done Brilliantly Hit: 5 Stars
There have been a lot of criticisms of this album based on the tempo and Hahn's supposedly "mechanical" style. While ask any 10 classical music fans about any given album and you'll get 10 different responses, I see this album as deserving more praise than some are willing to give it.There's a tendency among classical musicians to try to "sexy" up Bach, interpreting the music more liberally than perhaps was intended. Hahn clearly understands Bach, and doesn't try to play Bach as though he were writing in the Romantic period rather than the Baroque. Hahn plays Bach in a way that's much closer to the original - not overtly embellished by made brilliant by its dynamic range and mathematical complexity. Hahn is one of the world's greatest violinists, blessed with excellent intonation and the ability to handle even the most complex passages with absolute precision. Some may find this mechanical, but I find it appropriate for the style of Bach's time. There are points where the tempo is a bit faster than it perhaps should be, but it in no way diminishes the excellence of this recording, which is a brilliant addition to any library of classical music.
Free Music Review: Mastery and happiness Hit: 5 Stars
I really must beg pardon of the previous reviewer (see "Precision-Guided Bach") and strenuously object to the characterization of this album as having no "soul". While we agree that the technical mastery is fantastic, what struck me first and foremost upon listening to this disc is the emotion it carries. The recording doesn't cover the entire emotional range possible, within the work itself or in the person, but it still seems to come from an artist herself deeply moved--generally made happy--by Bach's works, and sharing that with us here. Hahn has mentioned in interviews that she finds Bach's instrumental music to be quite danceable--yes, danceable--and with that bit of knowledge and a willing mind, I find myself agreeing with her assessment, and finding new enjoyment in these works, themselves old friends. Hahn, a mere youngster (a comment not meant at all deprecatingly), is already mastering her insrument like few can even dream of, and as she matures her playing will no doubt mature and grow even further. I listen to this recording and smile; with the next, I expect I might cry. Bravo, Miss Hahn.
Free Music Review: Bach: "Thank you Hilary..." Hit: 5 Stars
No words to explain the emotion that Hilary gives me when she plays. In this CD everything is perfect, from intonation (always incredible!!) to musical interpretation. I HATE filological editions, recordings made with original...bad...out-of-tune instruments...no-vibrato...
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN??
Time has changed, and every composer wrote music to be played well, in tune, exactly how it was written on paper. Why should somebody play Mozart on forte-piano TODAY? did you know that mozart wrote many times to the new PIANOFORTE builders-craftsmen saying: "please, when the new pianoforte will be ready to be played? because I hate the Fortepiano...it's always out of tune...has a bad sound...!!please...!".
well, today there's still people playing mozart on forte piano; I'm not one of them...
I love Bach played with the gentle vibrato of miss Hahn, I cannot imagine it played in an other way.
the allegros are really "well tempered", so clear and bright. the slow movements are touching...Hilary makes the listener crying with her sound and beautiful musicality.
she puts love in music, as nobody else.
Free Music Review: I takes an effort to accept the tempo, yes Hit: 5 Stars
If you have ever, tapped your fingers to, or ...head banged(!) to any music, you might agree with what I feel. Last night I heard most of the cd. Yes, it is truly remarkable and still fresh in terms of technique, yes; (a lot). That alone is worth the purchase by far. mmmm, It does takes a little effort to accept the tempo.
I Imagine that this may be the source of most of the discomfort I read in some of the other reviews. I felt that it was less, Bach talking to me about beauty through her; as it was her, Jeffrey Kahane and the L.A. chamber Orchestra, talking to me about Beauty... through Bach (today, now, this instant). In fact, sometimes "she" yelled at me some of those phrases.
And that was fine. And that was: intense.
A good-benevolent-damned-fever. It is a "Yang" or male type of listening. God knows we have had a lot of passive "Yin" in a long while.
I look forward for her to be 10 years more elaborate as an Artist, herself; I think that the -talk, will continue while never becoming a lecture and it will be more and more, the
thinking Artist in her the one doing it. Well, who knows.
Free Music Review: Exciting Hilary Hahn Hit: 5 Stars
I have listened to Bach many times, but was never so energized by it as I was when I heard it played up tempo the way that Hahn does. I find this an excitingly different approach. Now granted, this is one that may not appeal to all who are used to a slower rendition of Bach. But as a person who plays violin, I truly appreciate her ability to play this style of Bach with the precision and technique that I have come to associate with her. Way to go Hilary! And by the way, my daughter saw her in Prague several years ago at the music festival, and was entirely mesmerized by her. And she's not a classical music lover (by a long stretch) as I am. Much of what Hahn played during this concert with the San Francisco Philharmonic was from this album. Since then my daughter listens to her often. I say that this is an accomplishment when we can get those who won't normally tune into classical to listen. Since acquiring this album, I have purchased her other cd's, but this one still remains my favorite. I'm looking forward to the day that I can actually see her in person.
