Free Music Review: Yet Another Splendid CD From Hilary Hahn
Hit: 5 Stars

Hilary Hahn's reputation as one of the foremost violinists of our time is enhanced again with this splendid new release of J. S. Bach's violin concertos. And she is an exceptional violinist who hasn't allowed her newly earned fame and popularity go to her head. Instead, this new recording - with longtime Sony producer Thomas Frost at the helm of yet another distinguished effort - is a marvellous example of musical collaboration between Hahn and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra under the superb direction of keyboardist/conductor Jeffrey Kahane. Hahn's performances are noteworthy again for their splendid intonation and lyricism, but here she also demonstrates her willingness to perform as part of an excellent ensemble. The most exciting performance has to be the Double Violin Concerto, which features elegant, equally spellbinding, playing from the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra's concertmaster Margaret Batjer, but the others are just as fine too. Without question, this CD is one of the finest releases in classical music this year.

Free Music Review: The Best Version of the Concerto's in terms of Emotion
Hit: 5 Stars

In a way, I can understand the negative reviews. In terms of musicianship, I'm a guitar player not a violinist. I listen to violin music to get ideas for licks and emotional expressions on guitar. But as a guitar player, I can relate to the negative reviews. For example, when I hear someone cover a Jimi Hendrix song, I cringe because it's never played just like Jimi would.

Now, I imagine the negative reviews of Hilary's Bach Concertos are for a similar reason--it's not how Bach would have played it. And that's a valid reason. However, what it does have, that the other versions I've listened to don't have, is emotional content.

Hahn plays the concertos like she really REALLY enjoys the music. I've listened to three other versions of the Concertos by well-known violinists and they just don't have the same level of emotional content. Kind of bland. Kind of slow. So, I don't see her playing as fast at all. For me, it's the right tempo for the emotional content that she's conveying.

Free Music Review: Exhilarating
Hit: 5 Stars

Having lived with the magisterial Grumiaux recording of these works for so long, I been thinking of getting a differing version with up-to-date sound for some time now. This version from Hillary Hahn fits the bill perfectly. Some of the tempos are fast, but one quickly gets use to them and what is left is the feeling of exhilaration. There is no feeling that she, or the LA Chamber Ensemble is rushing. The slow movements are expressively preformed without becoming syrupy,as often is the case. Hillary Hahn's tone is flexible and radiant throughout. Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra is a marvel of precision and alertness, matching the soloist enthusiasm every second of the way. The sound quality is the best I have heard from a Deutsche Grammophon recording; the bass lines are especially clean and clear. Needless to say, I love this CD. I hope that Hillary Hahn has plans to do the Bach Sonatas for Violin & Keyboard in the near future.

Free Music Review: I liked it....
Hit: 5 Stars

A lot has been written about this CD, so I'll keep my review short. I was really impressed by the playing on this disc. Hilary has come a long, long way. This is her best CD yet. It is some of the most perfect violin playing I have ever heard. Hahn's sound is very straight forward, and crystal clear, yet still warm and inviting. The technique is flawless.

There has been much made about Hahn's interpretations. If you want more on that, there are plenty of other reviews that go into greater detail. It's tough to please everybody, especially with Bach. What do I hear? I don't hear a "poor interpretation" of the baroque style. I don't hear movements taken "too fast" or "too slow." All I hear, is good music. If you want to hear good music, along with some fantastic violin playing, pick up this disc.

Free Music Review: A must have CD!!
Hit: 5 Stars

As an amateur pianist I only listen to classical music casually, so I'm no expert on the great soloists of the violin. However when I originally saw Hilary playing on a local public TV station that runs a program that plays various classical music videos. A little promotional/documentary about this CD was playing and I was simply entranced by the music I heard. Becoming an instant "fan" I bought 4 of her albums, and this one I believe is head and shoulders above the rest. I don't know if it's simply the selections of music by Bach or her obvious mastery of the violin that make this CD such a joy to listen to for me. All I know is that I can't wait to hear more recordings from this great musician!
