Free Music Notes for Bach Edition: Complete Works (155 CD Box Set)

Free Music Review: awesome!
Hit: 4 Stars

Okay, so some of the recordings are not great. That's true, and I'm not a discerning listener. However, look at the title again--"Complete Works". If you like classical music and you haven't built up a library of misc. Bach CDs, how could you not buy this? I'm playing it through, and I'm enjoying it immensely.

Free Music Review: Outstanding set of Bach works
Hit: 5 Stars

I highly recommend this set. First the production of this set is excellent. The CDs are very well organized in sleeves which are numbered, color matched by musical types, and well notated in as to the contents and performers. Unlike some other bargain CD sets, the CDs in this set are very solid with some heft to them, rather then unsubstantial flimsy disk one sometimes gets. The sound? Uniformly outstanding, especially for the keyboard works and Cantatas. The organist Fagiu is truly great in the organ works. The Cantatas are VERY satisfying, with some outstanding soloist to be heard. Cantata 51 is to be found in this set, contrary to what another reviewer has said. The other instrumental works are very well performed. More often then not, they come very close to the best performances which are available elsewhere. One can not go wrong with this set. At the asking price, it is an absolute steal. Four and one half stars overall for the performances, six, if it were possible, for the price, so I will rate this set as a solid five.

Update - I have revised this review now that months later I have heard most of the set. With increased listening, I have grown more fond of the performances of the Cantatas. They definitely give much more expensive sets the run for the money. Can't afford the John Gardiner cycle? Get this Bach collection instead, you will not be disappointed.

Free Music Review: More than a great deal
Hit: 5 Stars

I've just got the set, and listened to a sample of each section: orchestral music, cantatas, violin music, keyboard suites. The performances are surprisingly good and the price, at about 70c per CD, does not reflect the value. I plan to listen to one CD every day on the way to work. With one week off, this should take exactly a year. If you find the idea of listening to the entire output of Bach thrilling, and if you don't feel like spending $2,400 on the other set, this is the set for you.

Free Music Review: 5 star Bach performance
Hit: 5 Stars

I was amazed of receiving so much good music performed by - for me - unknown musicians at such a reasonable price! The performers do a brilliant work; the presentation of musicians, singers, texts and history of Bach on an extra DVD was fine. Packaging and graphic design excellent. 5 Stars!

Free Music Review: Surprisingly good!
Hit: 5 Stars

I received the box yesterday and I have only heard a few discs so far. But this is such an incredible bargain that I think it would not be fair to other potential buyers to delay writing a short report about my experience. As others customers have said, the performances are good, often VERY good, sometimes less. But this is only to be expected with such a large collection. My main fear was that given the price the engineering might be doubtful. But this is definitely not so: all the records I have heard sound beautifully on my Meridian player. This is due in part no doubt to the enormous technical advance in digital recording after the disastrous initial years (CDs from the eighties sometimes sound to me like a joke!).
