Free Music Notes for Bach Edition: Complete Works (155 CD Box Set)

Free Music Review: Excellent value
Hit: 4 Stars

How nice it is to have the collected works of an important composer in one place. But of course, this isn't just any composer, but a prolific writer whose oevre takes up 155 CDs! That works out for less than a dollar a CD, far less than a dollar an hour of music.

I have listened to perhaps 30 of the CDs by now. Some are great, some seem less than great... but to my ear they are all good enough for reference.

It seems a good idea to get the set, and then perhaps branch out and get alternate recordings of favorite pieces. In any case, I am enjoying the set and will be enjoying it and studying it for years to come.

Free Music Review: Too good to be true
Hit: 5 Stars

I always dreamed to have all Bach's cantatas, never dream to have all Bach's work. When I saw this deal I jump on it, and immediately regret , as in my age i would like to choose the performers myself. Any how as the price is so cheap I decide to buy it. When I got it I was really surprised, the quality in most of the CD that I already heard , is very good , and some are excellent without any doubt.
Another surprise is those pieces that I didn't know about their existence and they are like a new treasure for me. (just a small example-do you know that Bach rewrite the Stabat mater of Pergolesy?) Another surprise is all the CDs of collections of all the Motets and other surprising collections.
No doubt that this is one of the best buy that I have ever made ( considering the cheap price and even not considering it) .

Free Music Review: Great Value for the Price

I have always wanted to have a collection of ALL of Bach's work, but also had a limited budget. This to the ultimate solution. Where else can you purchase 155 CDs for less than $1 a CD and have something done well? I have not had a chance to listen to all 155 CDs, but the one's I've sampled are well done by professional musicians. The solists, choral groups, and instrumental artists are excellent. You can not go wrong with this purchase. The CDs come in light cardboard sleeves, which make it compact. A CD ROM is also included with History and other interesting facts plus the complete Libretto. The down side the Libretto is only in German. I wish there would have been other language translations available on the CD ROM. Aside from that, I would highly recommend this collection. As I'm writing this, I'm listening to the Mass in B Minor from the collection performed by The Sixteen Choir and Orchestra. Well Done!

Free Music Review: Bach-in-a-Box! Wow!
Hit: 5 Stars

I just received this set this evening and have listened to three CDs chosen at random. The first was Bach's parody of Pergolesi's Stabat Mater. The second was works for the organ and the third, an hour of cantatas.

Given that Bach is by far my favorite composer, and that I prefer performances on period instruments, I am much more than impressed with what I have heard so far. The quality is at least as good as the Bach recordings that I have purchased individually-the performances are more than competent.

Normally I would wait longer to review a purchase, but it will take at least a couple of months to listen to the entire set, and I am very pleased already. I am especially excited about listening to some of the harpsichord pieces that I have never heard before.

The price, which breaks down to about seventy cents per CD, is astounding. The value here is huge. This set is selling for about six or seven percent of what it is worth. It is great that the entire panorama of Bach's music has been made available and accessible.

UPDATE: Wish I had checked the price on Amazon.UK, which sells it for about twenty dollars less, including delivery, making it about fifty-five cents per disc. That would make it a bargain even if it were a mish-mash of outdated, mediocre performances, which it is not. The quality of the performances is consistently good. It is wonderful to listen to works by Bach that I had never heard before.

UPDATE #2: Okay, after just under a month, I must say this is the best value for any sort of entertainment I have experienced in my entire life. No joke. If you like Bach on period instruments, buy this. I still stand by my statement that the quality is consistently good. There is a wide variety of musicians and vocalists, and that's a plus, because 155 CDs of the same performers would get stale. I love this set! Thank you to everyone involved in creating it. My only regret is that this was not available twenty years ago.

Free Music Review: Spectacular bargain

I am roughly two-thirds of the way through the cantatas, and have covered much of the keyboard and instrumental works. Many of the cantatas are delightful, and it is a shame they don't get more attention than they do. Considering the price, I have been very pleased with the quality of the performances.

Best money I've ever spent.
