Intellectual discussions aside, this recording is incredibly fulfilling and satisfying. I've listened to this CD set for 15 years and find I return to it again and again. Transparent enough to follow the contrapunctal lines, accented enough to understand musical intent, rhythmic enough to jam to, Gardinner's Mass is superlative (though not perfect, as if there were such a thing!). And, of course, the B Minor Mass itself is a colossus, a breathtaking journey of inner and outer beauty, of cosmic reach and profound depths, pristine and powerful. Has it ever been equalled?
