Simon Preston's 1991 Bach readings on the Sauer Organ (1984) of St. Peter's, Waltrop (Germany) are very credible in every way: technically superb and musically attractive.
The organ is registered with a very light, bright specification and Preston's playing is likewise featherweight in a most pleasing manner.
(By comparison, Biggs' Bach would be super-heavyweight, and Walcha's somewhere in between.)
The programme is very agreeable with the great C-major Toccata (S.564), the g-minor Fantasia & Fugue (S.542), the `Schübler' Chorales (S.645-50), the F-major Toccata (S.540), concluding with the terrific c-minor Passacaglia & Fugue (S.582).
All in all a fine recital.
