Free Music Notes for Back To The Future: Music From The Motion Picture Soundtrack

Free Music Review: Terrible
Hit: 2 Stars

This release is just a stupid marketing ploy, one of those concoctions cobbled together to appeal to as many fans of the movie as possible. While it may satisfy casual listeners who want to relive the film by listening to the songs, it is a major disappointment to film score fans. I have owned this soundtrack for more than 15 years, and the only reason why I still have it is Alan Silvestri's 10 minutes of music. Taken at face value, the songs aren't even so great. Huey Lewis' 2 cuts are probably the best songs, very 80's. Time Bomb Town is just terrible. It's a piece of crap song that makes me want to vomit to this day. Heaven is One Step Away is a rather forgettable Eric Clapton number; this artist has done far better work. And the 50's songs? If I wanted 50's music I would buy one of those ubiquitous oldies collections. 50's crap has no place on a soundtrack to my favorite movie. I could care less for lame songs like "Dance With Me Henry" or a lame cover of "Johnny B Goode." They could have at least thrown in "Mr. Sandman," or included the funny guitar solo at the end of "Johnny B Goode." What I really want is the orchestral score!!!

Why hasn't this film score received a full release? Surely it can't be for lack of interest, or people thought it wouldn't make money. It's not like this was the score to some crap film like "Heavy Metal" or "Joe Vs. The Volcano." I think the people at Universal and MCA just got lazy. This is the best score Alan Silvestri has ever written. Nothing else has ever come close except for Predator. A brilliant, tuneful "Mission to Mars" tri-tone based main theme that is just timeless, an instant classic. Exciting ostinato driven suspense and action music. He even wrote a lovely interpolation of "Earth Angel" with his own BTTF theme for the scene where George and Lorraine kiss.

All we are given on MCA's crummy release is the main theme, The Letter, Clocktower Part 1, and then Doc Returns. Left off is the thrilling skateboard chase, Libyans, and Clocktower Part 2. I tracked down the DeLorean Records bootleg of this score and it was awful with tinny sound, and not only that, a second of The Libyans got cut out like some kind of bad burn. Years later, I came across a much better quality "promo" at a convention that sounds like a first generation copy rather than a lousy third generation cassette dub (DeLorean release). In this way, I can now enjoy the score in its full glory while I wait (without holding my breath) for a legitimate score release.

In short, Alan Silvestri's BTTF score rules. MCA's soundtrack CD however, sucks majorly hard.

Free Music Review: great music of the 50s and 80s
Hit: 5 Stars

absolutely LOVE this movie, and the entire series. To time travel you need: plutonium, or household waste, a DeLorean, and 88mph of speed. Oh, not to mention a flux capacitor.

Has the great songs from the movie, including all the instrumental bits.

Missing ''Mr. Sandman" from the 50s.

Free Music Review: If you loved the movie, remember it through the music!
Hit: 4 Stars

I have Sylvestri's score which is wonderful, but I was missing Marvin Berry's Earth Angel and Night Train from the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance. How fun it is to have them now.

Free Music Review: Loved the movie and the music
Hit: 4 Stars

This soundtrack includes great songs, such as Power of Love and a terrific remake of Earth Angel. I definately recommend it.

Free Music Review: "Time Bomb Town" worth the money!!
Hit: 5 Stars

My older brother had this tape back when it came out. We really loved all the movies as well as the songs in them. I have heard the Huey Lewis songs and the theme songs a million times, but I forgot all about the "buried treasure". I remember hearing "time bomb town" very briefly in the scene where marty's alarm goes off. I always thought it sounded like a weird song and never payed attention to it. Fast forward to 2007. I came across this soundtrack and "Time Bomb Town" blew me away. You may know Lindsey Buckingham as the guy in Fleetwood Mac, but he has some great solo stuff including "Holiday Road" from "National Lampoon's Vacation" Soundtrack from 1980 (another classic!) Anyway, I have been listning to "Time Bomb Town" non-stop for the last week, it is my favorite song at the moment and one of his best(including Fleetwood-Mac). It sounds very fresh, for being over 20 years old, and in my opinion is the best song on this soundtrack. CHECK IT OUT!
