Free Music Notes for Black & BlueFree Music Review: BSB gives *N Stink a run for their money Hit: 5 Stars
In the beginning, when BSB had just broke into the Pop music scene, I was clueless as to what all the hype surrounding them was about. I could not see what so special about them. I was utterly unconvinced that they were worth buying into. Then came Millennium. The first time I heard Larger Than Life, I thought, 'Ah.... it IS a decent song', but still decided against them, Next came I Want It That Way which I fell in love with. Slow, sweet, and very touching. Impressive, I thought. FINALLY, Show Me The MEaning Of Being Lonely was released. I was sold. I knew I had to summon up the courage to go out and purchase Millennium. The first listen was all it took. I'll spare you the rest of the story and get to Black & Blue. I hate to compare it but I guess I will to make my point. I had previously bought No Strings Attached and thought it was wonderful (for the time being). Then I put on B&B. I can't help but notice that BSB's strong point is where *N Stynk is at its weakest: Slow songs, Ballads, connecting with the lyrics. Take 'How Did I Fall In Love With You' and 'This I Promise You'. With BSB, the notes are flowing, strong, and sound natural. With the other, it sounds strained, forced, and very unnatural. For now, I'll break it down, song by song. 1. The Call- A nice opener with attitude. This is a new version of their artistry, being that THEY are the ones cheating on their girl. Where did THAT come from? 2.Shape Of My Heart-Beautiful melody that goes on a very low key through most of the beginning of it. As you know, it was a monster hit. Nick shines on the high notes.3.Get Another Boyfriend-Great rhythm that is easy to follow. The remixes are even better. This is one of the best tracks on Black & Blue. 'Just anotha playa, playin in the name of love'.4.Shining Star-Nick and Howie cowrote this song. It mostly belongs to A.J. with his soulful style. Nick sounds a little nasal but it works with this kind of thing. It reminds me of a song I use to listen to on the radio.5.I Promise You-Yes, you may confuse it with a dinky song by....any guesses? But, on the contrary of what you might think, it was not written to "copy" anything. It is a slow song and I think you know what it's about. Moving on.6.The Answer To Our Life-Was written by all 5 Boys. I must congratulate them on a job very well done. And you should too. It does have that ...Baby One More Time feel to it. But who cares. It's a neat song anyway. Upbeat, catchey, and commendable lyrics that's NOT about love (Thank God).7.Everyone-This is my ultimate favorite song. There is no other song like it on Black & Blue. It's Pop yet R&B yet it's really neither. It's hard to explain. Just listen to it and see why. It has been rideculed for being titled after 'Everybody'.What do they know.8.More Than That-This is the latest effort at #1 and by all means it has succeded in doing so. Hit on the radio, TRL, and practically everywhere else. You know how wonderful it is, so I'll skip it.9.Time-BSB seems to enjoy preforming this on T.V. shows etc. This was also written by all 5 Boys. It really displays their talent in the harmonies, lyrics, melody, arrangements, EVERYTHING!!!!!10.Not For Me-When first listened at a glance, it just sounds like heavily diluted Steps [...]-type music. But once you really get into it, it is quite enjoyable. I love to get up and dance to it. I hope they preform it in their live shows. It has those techno sound effects that is really popular right now.11.Yes, I Will-This song had to grow on me severley. Yet another song written by the preformers. Actually, it was just A.J. that wrote it. Strong referance to Time. If you like that song, you will LOVE this. One of the only 6 slow songs on this album compared to Millennium's majority of Ballads.12.It's True-Cowritten by Kevin, the melody is slightly repetitive but bearable. This was actually the first single off Black & Blue, but was only released on the Burger King 'For The Fans' discs. Yet again, Nick shines on this for doing his part a little different than the rest of the guys.13.How Did I Fall In Love With You-It brought a tear to my eye after listening to it. Nothing is more heartbreaking than hearing them sing a love song. This should have been Howie's solo, but he was nice enough to share his self-penned tearjearker with (my hottie) Brian. They go into it soft and lonely then move to a confused tone, only to hit the top with a voice so clear and strong even Mariah couldn't beat. That makes a statement in itself. To wrap it up, go screw *N Stinks 'Celebrity' and and show that Backstreet is here to stay whether they like it or not. Purchase with pride, your copy of a masterpiece. If they are coming to a town near you, go show your love for Nick, Howie, A.J., Brian, and Kevin. Cause you know it's true, BSB kicks bootay. K.T.B.S.P.A.4EVER
Free Music Review: A Critical Analysis After A Closer Listen Hit: 5 Stars
Okay, I reviewed this one a few days ago. I had just bought this and was miserably disappointed. After a more discriminative listen, I'm slowly becoming hooked. Although I think you should love songs from the moment you hear them, I have changed my mind. This is not a bad CD, but it's certainly not bad. I still think they're going to have trouble keeping their popularity up. As much as I hate to admit it, I still think "This I Promise You" is better than "Shape of My Heart," but that's just me. Here are some thought on the tracks. 1. The Call: I still think this is the stupidest ever. I'll give it upbeat, but the lyrics are dumb. I think it's about a guy who cheated on his girl and is regretting it but the whole idea's kinds foggy.2. Shape of My Heart: This is their current single. Turn on any top 40 radio program or TRL and it'll be number one. I don't know how or why, exactly, but it manages somehow. It's not bad, but the best part is the ending. I like the melody. 3. Get Another Boyfriend: Now THIS is a good song. About how some girl has this loser boyfriend and the Boys are trying to talk her out of the relationship. It has a classic Backstreet dance beat. 4. Shining Star: It's a pretty song, the lyrics are incredible, but I just feel cheated by the tune. Their voices are particularly nice in this one, to me. I would say you have to hear it. 5. I Promise You (With Everything I Am) This is too mushy and boring for my tastes. I suppose if you're into love ballads, you'll like it. To me, this is just filler. 6. The Answer to Our Life: All right! I figured this would be one of those unbearable love songs with the elongated vocals and touching lyrics. I guess you could say that it is, but it's got this incredible tune. Don't get me wrong, it's not "I Want It That Way" quality, BUT it's a really good song how the Boys have found their dream girl and they can answer each others' prayers. It would make a great single. 7. Everyone: This is one of the few I've liked since I first heard it. Created in the spirit of "Everybody" and "Larger Than Life" I think any true fan will agree that it's one of the best here. I can play this one on a loop and never get tired of it- even if my dad does threaten to blow up my boom box! 8. More Than That: This is simply perfect. The lyrics are moving and the tune is lovely. 9. Time: This is by far my favorite on the album and I have this sneaking suspicion it's the next single. It follows they're feelings of how their careers have progressed over the years, and how they've changed. It's one of the more mature, more pleasant to hear songs. It was not an istant favorite, but I can see it becoming a permanent favorite. 10. Not For Me: I love this song! It's upbeat and has this attention catching entry. The guys say that, despite cute looks, they're onto the siren that's leading them on and know she's got someone else. Perfect, in my opinion. 11. Yes I Will: When I heard this song first, I teared up and now I still do, every time. The song is actually that powerful. If you don't love this song, there's something seriously wrong with you and you should see a doctor. Anything to let me pretend Brian or Nick is actually on his knees wanting to marry me- hah! I'll listen to that all day long! 12. It's True: Most of you who had lunch at Burger King in the fall probably fell for the crummy CD that this was on. I loathed it immediately and can remember thinking "If this is the best they have to offer-" I think they should have picked something else, like "Get Another Boyfriend" or "Everyone" but, I gues they know they're CD's will sell regardless. 13. How Did I Fall in Love With You: If I'm not mistaken AJ wrote this. It shows that he's not only cute, he's BRILLIANT! It is the best of the love ballads and one of the best Backstreet songs of all time. You have to buy the CD for this, if nothing else. Well, that's it. I have to admit I downright hated this CD when I first heard it, but I hated most of Millennium, too at first. I'm not promising you anything "I Want It That Way" or "Quit Playing Games" quality, but all the songs have a certain power that makes you want to listen to them again and again- once you get past the initial disappointment. So, if you're still looking for that perfect gift for your teenage niece, this probably isn't the best choice, but if you're looking for one for someone from the golden age of pop and rock, you just found what THEY call music!
Free Music Review: WHy should you believe my review? Backstreet Boys- Black&Blu Hit: 5 Stars
I'm not gonna try to convince you just read it!!! It may or may not help!!! But this is an honest review of the newest BSB album "Black and Blue". I never thought this album would be any good, I have heard their other two albums and own them. I, like almost everyone else is tiring of pop. But this is album is different from the rest of the boyband albums it is definetely a standout. It doesn't sound the same not like you think it would or will. Even if you don't like BSB or pop you can appreciate good music right? Unless you are completely close-minded to one genre like some people. Here is the song-by-song lowdown: The Call: This is a great dance song very upbeat, it has an awesome beat in the background. One of the best up-tempos. Despite what some people may think. And despite of its lack of radio airplay. Shape of my Heart: The first song off here to be put out as a single. I used to hate this song to tell you the truth, but it grew on me. Its very sweet, sincere, and soothing. Get another Boyfriend: This is a great up-tempo track, its really cool ahaha You have to hear it for yourself. Another great dance track. Shining Star: Despite what you may think from the title, this is NOT in the least bit a slow song!!! Its up-tempo with sly lyrics and sweet vocals. A nice touch. I promise you(With everything I am): I know it sounds like it could be a wedding song, and it could be , its just so beautiful. And the lyrics are great. The Answer to Our Life: Another good up-tempo song, not like the others it has a different beat and melodic style the lyrics are good too. A really good song. Everyone: This song is dedicated to the fans like "Larger then Life" off of Millenium, but it doesn't hit you like Larger then Life does. Its has an okay melody, but nothing great. I do like the Circus sound effect though!!! More Then That: You've probrably heard this ong allready, and why not it was definately hit worthy, its in my opinion the best ballad on the CD, AJ's voice melts me it bleeds with raw emotion. Something most vocalist lack. Time: ANother sweet ballad its also one of the best on the disc completely penned by the voice 1 of the 6 on the CD. Its sweet soothing and soft. Nice lyrics. Beautiful melody... Not for me: This is a cool song I like it alot. It has funky sound effects and the lyrics give off a sassy attitude ehehe I know they aint girls, but yeah anyways.. "No no uh uh...!!!" Yes I will: Not one of my fav ballads it has beautiful singing and harmonies, but it just doesn't hit me like the others do... Its True: I like this one its very nice nice melody, lyrics, vocals, nice EVERYTHING!!!yaya!!! How did I Fall in love with you: A nice way to end an album, very pretty, the the piano and strings. It makes me shiver and almost makes me cry. Ahaha I remember someone once saying a ballad wasn't good unless it makes you cry... Well this almost did and "More than that" did!! This album is DEFINETELY better then *NSYNC's third effort "Celebrity", no offense to *NSYNC or their fans hey and you may liek it better oh well, but its better musically, lyrically, and vocally. All the songs with the exception of a couple are great. The one thing that *NSYNC's album really lacks is good lyrics, but it also lacks originality. This album may not be completely original, but at least BSB didn't stick to the same formula and though they only sold 8million copies(ONLY OKAY THAT's ALOT, but they did sell over 10million with their other two). If BSB doesn't make another CD its better that they reite with a good album like this and not a terrible or mediocre one. So I *Wish* BSB luck I have alot of respect for the guys I know they love the music the most first and that that's why they do it. Its not about flashy clothes and boasting about their melodies. Also their voices hold the raw emotion *NSYNC's voices lack, don't get me wrong I like *NSYNC too. SO I'm not hating on them!!! God Bless and I *HOPE* I helped!!!! ~Amy
Free Music Review: Above Average But Better Than Others Out There Hit: 5 Stars
Backstreet Boys' "Black & Blue" Album Review Ratings: Excellent - memorable and catchy; hooks you the first time and lasts a long time Great - takes a while to get in to but becomes memorable and catchy Good - average song; the pros equal the cons Weak - has very little good parts and never fully soars Poor - horrible; no good parts; skip it Note: In order to review these songs, I listened to ALL of them morethan three times for them to sink in. 1. The Call - Excellent PROs: Loved it the first time I heard it and I can't seem to get it out of my head CONs: Sounds like 98 Degrees' "Give Me Just One Night" and 'N Sync's "Bi, bi, bi" er "Bye, bye, bye" 2. Shape Of My Heart - Great PROs: Loved it the first time I heard it; catchy but not annoying CONs: weak lyrics; lack of power (unlike I Want It That Way or Show Me the Meaning) 3. Get Another Boyfriend - Excellent PROs: Sounds very unique and VERY memorable; great party music CONs: The muffled, static voice could have been improved 4. Shining Star - Weak (almost Poor) PROs: The bridge; RnB-esque (sounds like TLC's "Shout" -- which is WAY superior) CONs: Annoying; poor production value; horrible use of the Boys' vocal powers 5. I Promise You (With Everything I Am) - Good PROs: IT'S NOT COUNTRY!; sweet and sentimental; great lyrics CONs: there's a great build up but there's no climax; slow chorus 6. The Answer To Our Life - Great PROs: Excellent vocals; upbeat(but not loud) and uplifting; unique rock feel CONs: You can EASILY tell that the Boys wrote this 7. Everyone - Good PROs: Somewhat momorable; great chorus; nice use of instruments CONs: Circus jingle part; wierd intro(sounds like Marilyn Manson;-); stereotypical BSB upbeat song 8. More Than That - Good PROs: Smooth chorus; relaxing sound and feel (kinda contemporary) CONs: Intro(Brian's part) kinda sounds out of place; somewhat monotonous 9. Time - Good PROs: Above average quality; excellent vocals CONs: Overhyped; not their best ballad (probobly their worst if they realse this as a single) *I hope they won't relases this as a single 'cause it's juts not up there with IWITW and SMTOBL as a ballad 10. Not For Me: Good PROs: Upbeat but not too loud -- in a good way CONs: Chorus sounds a bit 70s 11. Yes I Will: Weak PROs: Pretty good chorus; not as cheesy as it sounds CONs: Sounds like "I'll Never Break Your Heart"(especially the intro); mediocre 'marriage' theme song 12. It's True: Weak PROs: Nice use of instruments and vocals(except Nick -- he's straining again, just like Justin T.) CONs: Slow chorus; weak lyrics; typical overly-sweet-bubblegum ballad 13. How Did I Fall In Love With You: Good PROs: Brian's parts; sentimental but not gooey; fresh lyrics and sound CONs: Some of Howie's parts; doesn't go anywhere; some confusing lyrics TOTAL: Above Average -I gave this album 5 stars because, compared to the rest out there, this is basic perfection (even the "bad" songs have great moments). And besides, a perfect album is an album comprised with songs that suit your personal taste. And there's no commercial album like that out there(unless its illegal).
