Free Music Review: Radio and What's Popular Seems to Rule, but Dolly's Fans Know Better

I sincerely agree with another reviewer in that today's music market, what's "hot" and "popular" seem to send into the background those who have shown true longevity and talent within the music industry. Not to say that those who are "popular" or sell well don't have talent, but I find it grossly unfair that mainstay artists seem to be getting the "brush-off" in terms of airplay and sales. Everyone seems to be more into the icing, not the cake of substance.
Case in point-Dolly's new CD. If it's any consolation Dolly, your true fans know you put out an awesome disc. It's true ear candy and it's entertaining and inspirational.
I like a mixture of music on a CD and Dolly offers that.
Traditional country in "Heart of Stone" and "I Will Forever Hate Roses" take me back to old time country with respect.
"Better Get To Livin" is a mid-tempo upbeat number that is a good one to listen to given how hard it is to deal with just day to day life stress anymore. We have two choices, get to livin' or keep whinin' and pinin'. Dolly sure says it here.
I agree that at first listen "Drives Me Crazy" was a bit cheesy, but I never thought of a country music version of this and the fiddles do work! And the distinctly different uptempo finish made me smile and chuckle. It's a cover song, but Dolly makes it her own.
"Tracks of My Tears" is another cover made popular by Linda Ronstadt, I find it respectful as Dolly has sung with her before to make a cover of a Linda song and she does in good taste.
I knew I'd find a gospel song on here and Dolly doesn't dissapoint with "Jesus and Gravity". A very profound, can't disagree with it type of song for me. It makes sense for anyone who believes in God and Gravity and for those who get the message, the song is so listenable. Dolly truly gives her fans not just songs, but gifts. I like listening to it when I feel those blues coming on.
"BackWoods Barbie" has a type of "Coat of Many Colors" feel to it. There's no doubt as to who this song is about! One thing I've always respected about Dolly-she doesn't take herself too seriously and she's honest about who she is.
However, in all CD's, I have my favorites and I have two of them. I was really pleased to see that many reviewers agree with me. The first "Cologne", a mid-tempo number, is excellent in Dolly's voice and production. It starts off slow and builds with each verse into a dramatic finish, really catching the build of emotion as someone trapped in a love triangle and the anguish it brings on as to what to do about it.
BUT my favorite and this song is just a hoot, is "Shinola", to me one of the best up tempo country songs to come along in a long time. I like mid-tempo songs, but a foot stompin, head nodding, finger snapping, have to watch my speed limit if I'm listening to it while on the highway type of upbeat song gets me going and Dolly just nails it. For any woman who's ever been burned by a man and thought he was a total jerk, ladies, listen to this one, Dolly's singing and driving this one home for you. The production on this song is awesome as it doesn't stop short. When you think it's over, she starts in again giving the guy a kick in the seat of his pants. It's a hoot.
In addition, the packaging is really entertaining with Dolly and the yellow pickup truck, I love the back cover with her face in the rear view mirror, it's a hoot and the photos inside just show Dolly just gets better and more attractive. She's downright pretty. :))
Even though I was VERY dissapointed to not find Dolly's album near the top of the charts, Dolly, you made a gem for your fans, and I am one of those who truly appreciate it. I know others here agree.
