Free Music Notes for Backwoods Barbie

Free Music Review: Passion Fire
Hit: 5 Stars

Adding to the chorus of excellent reviews for Dolly Parton's latest CD, she has released this set fully loaded. The disc opens with the upbeat "Better Get to Livin'." The title song is a great with Dolly's delightful lyric, "Too much makeup, too much hair, don't be fooled by thinkin' that the good are not all there." "Jesus & Gravity" is unabashedly devotional with a full gospel chorus and Dolly's transcendent vocals, "I've got somethin' lifting me up, somethin' holdin' me down. Somethin' to give me wings & keep my feet on the ground." "Only Dreamin'" has a Celtic feel with John Mock's tin whistle and an aching lament highlighted in a brilliant string arrangement. Dolly adds two strong covers with Smokey Robinson's "The Tracks of My Tears" and Fine Young Cannibals' "She Drives Me Crazy." Both songs glow with fresh faces, Dolly's expressive vocal delivery and her excellent band. "The Lonesomes" makes me hit the repeat button with Dolly's Tennessee swing in full force, "Just like that old song by Hank Williams, I am so lonesome I could cry." "Somebody's Everything" romances us with a hopeful country melody, "And I want someone to come alive when they lay eyes on me, have a lust within their touch, a passion fire beyond belief." One chain released a special edition has a live bonus track of "Baby I'm Burnin'" from Dolly's "Heartbreaker" album that rocks the house. This is another in a series of excellent releases by Dolly Parton who shows no sign of slowing down. Bravo!

Free Music Review: Amazing Dolly
Hit: 5 Stars

This is Dolly Parton's first true mainstream release in 17 years and also her first disc on her own label. All I can say is BRAVO !!! This set will definitely please her diehard fans and surely gain her some new ones. Her vocal performance here is top notch and she puts her heart and soul in each track. This is certainly not an artist resting on her laurels. It shows why she is the Queen of Country.

There are pure country tracks, some pop country and some remakes as well. The cd gets a great uplift with the life affirming, toe tapping tracks BETTER GET TO LIVIN and JESUS @ GRAVITY. Dolly is preaching to the masses with all her heart and true impassioned gusto. The gospel edge is awesome. Backwood Barbie is a sort of personal song about herself and who she really is. Her vocals here are like velvet and her delivery is filled with emotion. The same can be said for COLOGNE a tender ballad of the emotions of a man's mistress.

There are no misses here. The remakes - TRACKS OF MY TEARS and DRIVES ME CRAZY are given the Dolly touch to excellent results. Ballads MADE OF STONE and THE LONESOMES are also standout. Dolly has written most of the songs here. BACKWOODS BARBIE is from the musical 9 TO 5 which she has penned the soundtrack for. Dolly's innate talent shines through and this release is one of the best of her career. The eclectic mix works totally for a very satisfying experience.

Highly recommend this cd,

Free Music Review: hello Dolly
Hit: 5 Stars

How can anyone not love Dolly? She just personifies Country Music and she's so beautiful and talented and funny and brilliant. But most of all, she's the best! I think this CD is for longtime fans who enjoy classic country (like myself) just as much as it's for Dolly's new fans who also enjoy contemporary and modern/everyday country. I enjoy all of the songs on the CD because as usual Dolly's voice is strong and her lyrics are very beautiful. It's difficult to say which is my favorite, if I had to choose I'd probably take "Backwoods Barbie" because it's such a danceable song that has Dolly written all over it! Who do I recommend this CD to? Anybody, even if you don't like country, you may enjoy the Backwoods Barbie CD because Dolly has a way of speaking to everyone. So try it, you may be surprised. I have all the songs on my iPod and my favorite time to listen to this is when I'm busy cleaning my kitchen or scrubbing the floors because it always makes the time go by that much quicker. I also really like the packaging, instead of being in those traditional plastic jewel cases, the CD is housed in a paper/cardboard case which just seems so much easier to get to and much better on the environment. ...The bargain store is open, come inside!

Free Music Review: Wonderful New Album from Dolly! A+++!!!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

All of songs from Dolly's new album are terrific, it takes you back to the old Dolly we all know and love! The title song is very fun & catchy and has Dolly reminding everyone that she may look artificial but where it counts she's real its a great song & as Dolly must know she is GORGEOUS. The first single from the record "Better Get to Livin'" is also one of the most catchy songs with a great message & vocals! I especially love Dolly's version of "Drives me Crazy" its so much fun to listen to and it work's so well for her."Jesus & Gravity" "Cologne" "The Tracks of My Tears" "Somebody's Everything" & "I Will Forever Hate Roses" are some of the best Country songs I have ever heard. This is all very original material from the Queen of Country and I am so pleased I purchased this album the day it came out I might go get it from Best Buy also with the bonus song "Baby, I'm Burnin' (Live)". This is a return to form for Dolly and I would rate this album 10 stars if possible, her vocals are great and it takes you back to the days of the Heartbreaker; New Harvest - First Gathering; Here You Come Again records to just name a few! Highly recommended, I am so proud that Dolly continues to inspire us with her messages and beautiful voice!

Free Music Review: Classic Dolly!
Hit: 5 Stars

Dolly Parton returns to her country pop leanings on "Backwoods Barbie". After doing several bluegrass/mountain music albums, she has gone back to her traditional country sound. There are really only two songs on the album that don't hit the mark, "Better Get To Livin'" which to me is too much of a novelty song and her cover of The Fine Young Cannibals "Drives Me Crazy" which just sounds a bit too cheesy (although the end of the track redeems it somewhat). The stand out tracks are "Jesus & Gravity", "Cologne", "Shinola" and "Only Dreamin'". The tracks "Made Of Stone" and "I Will Forever Hate Roses" recall Dolly's sound from the early 70's. Overall this is a solid collection from Dolly. Sadly, I doubt radio will pick up much from the album (although "Cologne" and "Shinola" could both be hit singles). It would be interesting to see what would happen if Dolly were to team up with say a Jack White like Loretta Lynn did a couple years ago or with Rick Rubin as Johnny Cash and The Dixie Chicks did. Her lyrics have always been her strength, but give her a modern producer and she could very well get another "Here You Come Again" or "9 to 5".
Great album, horrible album cover, but luckily you don't judge an album by it's cover!
