Free Music Review: I was ruined by the Live Seeds album
Hit: 3 Stars

To me, this is the weakest of Nick's albums, but only because I was ruined by buying the Live Seeds album before purchasing this one. I'm sure my opinion may have been different if I'd gotten this album first. I heard the songs "Papa Won't Leave You, Henry", "Brother, My Cup is Empty", and "John Finn's Wife" on the Live Seeds album and LOVED them. They were extraordinarily powerful and I was amazed at how wonderful Nick and the Bad Seeds sounded live. I ended up liking the live versions of "Deanna", "The Ship Song", and "New Morning" much more than the originals, and because of this Henry's Dream was a let down. The album versions of the songs mentioned aren't half as powerful or moving as the live versions (although "John Finn's Wife" does have some great strings in it that the live version doesn't). I do especially enjoy the sappier songs -- "Straight to You" and "The Loom of the Land". The first time I heard "Straight to You" is when I saw the video on The Videos collection. Though it is somewhat sale outish, it's still wonderful and still very much Nick. My suggestion to anyone who wishes to purchase this album is this: if you already have the Live Seeds album, don't expect much; if not, you're in for a treat, as Nick and the Seeds are always apt to offer.

Free Music Review: Dark, weird, twisted, and very...fascinating.
Hit: 3 Stars

There was a book my wife wanted once called "Murder in America." It had stories about infamous murders and pictures to go with them, mostly crime scene photos which left nothing to the imagination. I could not help but read this book even though it made me shudder and feel filthy, somehow.

I feel the same way about this album. It's weirdly compelling. Cave's histrionics (and he is quite histrionic, let no one deceive you) are not as grating as I expected, but leavened with large doses of very black humor, and some lyrics that will not leave your skull no matter how hard you try to scrub them out. He is a good songwriter and a great singer, acrid and uncompromising in his approach. On a lot of the songs here there is a sense that he is almost compelled to write and sing these songs by something within himself that he cannot quite understand, and that fascinates me to no end.

This is my first exposure to Nick Cave; it will certainly not be my last.

Free Music Review: Henry's Dream
Hit: 3 Stars

Henry's Dream being Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds 1992 release is an aggresive and slightly insane release. Apparently, Nick Cave himself does not like this record. I disagree. Whilst it is not as good as Let Love In. It is still quite good. The problem that I see with this album is that the lyrics are not as strong as on Let Love In. Papa won't leave you, Henry is a perfect example where he could have edited the lyrics a bit since it is a bit wordy and the singing sounds a bit pressed at times. As if he is affraid that he will not be able to fit in all the lyrics to match the melody. Still, there are other tracks such Straight to you that are more at tune with lyrics and melody. Still and all this i a very solid release and I give it 3 stars.
