Free Music Notes for No More Shall We PartFree Music Review: Sublime! Nothing less - simply beautiful! Hit: 5 Stars
About 2 years ago, I was given a copy of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds 'Best Of...' album. I left it sit in my CD rack for about 18 months before giving it a real DECENT chance to sink in.I liked - I liked a lot, however, more so because of the fact that I, like Nick, am Australian (we also shared the same Maths teacher, but about 25 years apart) and felt that what Nick was singing about was something that transcended any sort of national identity. All this, and more, is true for 'No More Shall We Part'. This album is poetry, sheer poetry. Nick's voice seems to have matured, like the best of fine wines, to a heavenly level. From the opening 'sound' (it's not a chord, it's not a riff, it's a sound) of 'And I Sat Sadly By Her Side', you know this album is going to take you to a place that all albums should, but ever so rarely do. The themes of love, religion and redemption are there, and in my view, so much more eloquently written - the questioning of faith, for instance. I could go on and on about this album. I won't. It is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful albums of the modern era. And I'm Australian - I don't use the word 'beautiful' if I can avoid it. In this case, I can't.
Free Music Review: nick & the bad seeds have got my heart once again Hit: 5 Stars
nick's done it again, no surprise. with such an amazing arsenal of talent (mick, blixa, warren, conway, et al), coupled with nick's lyrical brilliance, it's no wonder that they have produced another wonderful album. this is one of my favorites from him, and while it can certainly be argued that this is not his best album, it is one of his most personally passionate and mature. he delves into his love of his wife; his cynicism about catholicism, biogotry, and racism; and of course his usual wonderings about god, people, love, and pain. i'm especially fond of 'no more shall we part', the title track. my fiancee and i will be dancing to it at our wedding. i had to read the lyrics a few times to be absolutely sure no one died or was left alone in that song, and while it bears a blank cynicism about the catholic church, and sounds melancholy at times, it remains a beautiful song about love and marriage. we saw nick & the seeds in concert last week, and the songs he performed from this album had just as much ferocity and meaning as any of his others. much applause to the bad seeds, and hope that they keep on rocking for many years to come. in short, BUY THIS ALBUM! ;)
Free Music Review: The Maestro just keeps getting better Hit: 5 Stars
I wish that I could say something that would make my take on this CD stand out from the rest, but it is difficult, as I join the chorus of people who praise it highly. I love all of Nick Cave's work, going clear back to the Birthday Party. For my money, he is one of the major figures in the history of rock music. It is just a matter of time until he is recognized as such: Dylan, Hendrix. . .Nick will be eventually be seen on this level. His body of work is so rich, so deep... and he keeps on growing. I loved Boatman's Call and I love this CD even more. (And his marvelously dynamic live album shows that one of those who must depend on studio manipulation to make his music work.) Nick's poetry continues to push out its boundaries, his vocals are ever more assured, the arrangements are ever more imaginative...what a band this man has! (So much credit goes to longtime collaborator Mick Harvey!) . . .enough said! As I indicated above, it is difficult to add anything original to the glowing praise that this great artist has received for this CD and his other works. Bravo, Nick! Only a few days more to wait for Nocturama!!
Free Music Review: And he's changed again......... Hit: 5 Stars
Since 1997's 'The Boatman's Call', Nick Cave has been busy working as Director of 1999's Meltdown Festival in London and perfecting works such as 'The Secret Life of the Love Song....' amongst other things. And if this album is any indication, he's also been consolidating his personal life. Cave is a married man now and it is to this union that he pays homage in the album's title. Gone is the psychotic young punk of 'The Birthday Party' and instead, a regal poet, a husband, a father, a man who has been hurt deeply by love's disappointments is on naked display (women often being cast as both tormentor and saviour in his work).....and we sit in hushed and respectful silence to soak up the lessons these experiences have brought him. Now in his early forties, Cave seems to be as content as a man tormented by numerous personal demons can be. It seems that Cave has been saved again (by a woman) and although steadied by it, he still casts a wounded eye to the world. A mesmerising, mature and beautiful album that is the perfect pinnacle to a long, ever-changing and frighteningly successful career.
Free Music Review: Another Winner from Cave Hit: 5 Stars
Though I love manic rants like "Tupelo" and "Red Right Hand," Cave is just as remarkable in his somewhat quieter vein. It definitely requires attention to the lyrics (at least two professional writers have assumed "God is in the house" is devotional rather than satiric; and much of the first track shows Cave in full self-parodic mode). He's not a writer to take for granted; into the middle of a comedy he'll throw a line or two that grabs at your heart - or vice versa. I expect I'll always find some of the material mysterious, but I can suggest that the first of three "walk" songs describes a period of creative stalemate and a temptation (probably to relapse into substance abuse) that's overcome; hence the "Hallelujah." Throughout the album there's lovely stuff and funny stuff and angry stuff , sometimes in the same song. If you're up for emotional ambivalence, "Darker with the day," the final track, is a good test: a savagely-described apocalyptic landscape and a meltingly lovely chorus. If this music doesn't grab you now, try it again in a few years.
