Free Music Notes for The Very Best of BadfingerFree Music Review: Great but ill-fated group of early seventies Hit: 5 Stars
Badfinger comprised Pete Ham (vocals, guitar), Tom Evans (bass), Joey Molland (quitar, keyboards) and Mike Gibbins (drums). They had two UK top five hits (Come and get it, No matter what) and a UK top ten hit (Day after day). These singles also did well in America, but the early promise was not sustained.
Perhaps their biggest legacy to pop music was a song that Pete and Tom wrote, but which was not a hit for Badfinger, although they recorded the song (and their version is included here). It is, of course, Without you. This haunting ballad became an international number one hit for Nilsson in 1972. It later became a country top ten hit for T G Sheppard in the eighties and a UK number one hit for Mariah Carey in the nineties.
Here you get the original recordings of the four songs already mentioned and many other excellent songs recorded for the Apple label. Things went badly wrong for the group after they left Apple, leading to Pete committing suicide in 1975 and Tom following suit in 1983.
Free Music Review: Great Badfinger Compilation Hit: 5 Stars
This new Badfinger compilation contains both Apple and Warner tracks. Undoubtedly this album will be a good appetizer and a good place for "newcomers" to start, All the hits are here and most of the immediately catchy songs too. Good to see Pete Ham so well-represented; and also great that "I'll Be The One" , the great lost single, is included. Obviously there are many great songs left out. I would like to have seen "Apple of My Eye", "Blind Owl", "Shine On", "Know One Knows" and some of the great "Head First"-tracks included ( "Keep Believing", "Lay Me Down", Mr Manager", "Moonshine" etc, ) . Also a bit disappointing that that none of the great still unreleased Apple tracks were not included as bonus-tracks. ( e.g. "Sing For The Song" and "Baby Please"). Still a great release
Free Music Review: A great pop group - period. Hit: 5 Stars
We have all heard some of the epic pop songs on this collection -'No Matter what', 'Day after Day' and 'Come and get it' - but what else do these guys have to offer? Well, I say LOTS. The team of Ham/Evans was as lethal as McCartney/Lennon, however their history unveils otherwise...I won't go there - what I will say is that these guys wrote some AMAZING great pop music of the time, a time when pop music was fading into total crap, and these guys had what it took to keep GOOD pop music up and running...for as long as they could. From the obvious 'hits' to other songs, Badfinger knew how to write a great pop song and keep it alive...hard to do these days. My recommendation - go out and buy it - add it to your 70's collection or whatever, however I am SURE you will enjoy the great music that should not be passed by - but admired by all true music lovers and discovered by few...
Free Music Review: Great song selection finally! Hit: 5 Stars
From my perspective, I can't argue with the song selection on this collection. Its much better than the previous Apple collection. For a single disc "best of", there is not a weak song in the bunch. It even includes one previously unreleased single. If you were going to own one Badfinger disc, this would be the one to have. Sound quality is outstanding. Personally, I find the vocal detail on this release to far exceed previous releases of the same songs. A big plus is the inclusion of some previously overlooked gems such as "Dennis","We're for the dark", and "When I Say" (which is a good choice from the Ass record though not as well known). Great liner notes complete the package. What more could you ask for? Well, for the passionate fan, maybe a concerted effort to give the full blown Badfinger catalog the treatment it deserves!
Free Music Review: Not bad; now how about a box set? Hit: 5 Stars
This CD provides a workmanlike overview of the band's career on both the Apple and Warner Brothers labels. For new or casual fans who only want the biggest hits, it's probably an ideal compilation. And while the song selection isn't as deep as that of the previous "Best Of" CDs (there's really no excuse for them not filling the disc out at a full 78 minutes, BTW), the sound quality is noticably improved with the newer, 24-bit remastering. One can't help wondering, however, when (or if) Apple/EMI plan to issue a box set on this great band. With three or four full-length discs, they could provide a truly definitive overview of Badfinger's finest moments AND include more of the rare and/or unreleased tracks that fans crave. Perhaps this new disc is the opening salvo of a full-blown reissue campaign by Apple and WB. One can always hope...
