Free Music Review: One of the Truest Albums I've Heard in a Long Time...

This is what happens when a record label lets a single artist do what ever he wants to--and it's pure genius. Badly Drawn Boy (I can't remember his actual name) is one of the most competent and prolific writers I've ever come across. Short of Bob Dylan, who else has written an 18-track album and not wasted one track on something not-so-good? The first Badly Drawn Boy track I heard was "Disillusion." Someone sent the .mp3 to me. I was blown away. It was like nothing I'd ever heard. So bouncy, so happy, so weird. So, I bought this album expecting to hear more of the same. I had no idea I was in for such a stylistic experiment. No two tracks on the album have the same feel to them--but they all work together. Let's see if I can't go through it all. The first track, "The Shining," is simply wonderful. One of the most beautiful orchestral melodies ever written. It makes me melt. (Isn't it in a GAP commercial, too?) Anyway, that drowns itself into "Everybody's Stalking," a loud (but not-too-loud) track that just bangs away, full of dry cymbals, cracking guitars and tense vocals. It's a bit of a Belle & Sebastian meets REM meets Radiohead deal, isn't it? The next 5 or so tracks weave in and out of acoustic guitar melodies, processed drum beats, cymbals and snare drums and percussion of all sorts, watery sound effects and intense imagery. The fade-in, fade-out of "Fall in a River" is a fantastic effect that makes a statement out of a 2-minute track. "This Song" sounds like something that one would hear on a children's televsion program; it's innocent and fun. The introduction and the piano line to "Magic in the Air" is simply sweet. Something recalling old Burt Bachrach, I'd say. It's light and airy and, well, magic. "Pissing in the Wind" is a straight-ahead sad love song, worthy of being the album's single. It's simple country-esque guitar strumming up-down, up-down bass line let it meander through the vocals like some old Johnny Cash croon. The album reches it's climax with "Disillusion," and I've already told you how I feel about that song. "Bewilderbeast" fades away with "Say It Again" and "Epitaph," two beautiful, and eerily peacful tunes. And that's it. This album comes at you from inside, as if you've heard it all before, but, no. All of these melodies and rhythms and voices are so true, it was as if what's-his-name, here, didn't even have to write them. They just appeared--perfectly. What an album.
