Free Music Review: A somewhat enchanting album

After the huge success of The Broadway Album, no one could blame Barbra for wanting to release a sequel, and due to its debut at #1, the public was more than willing to go along for the ride. In its own right, this is a good album. But as a sequel to a blockbuster, as expected, it was not as successful nor as good.
While the material on The Broadway Album was full of inspired singing, some of the singing this time around just comes across as blah (though she sounded as good as ever). But even if she was very enthusiastic, it wouldn't hide the fact that a lot of these songs are just not all that impressive or catchy.
That being said, there are more than enough redeeming songs and performances to cancel out the bad. "Everybody Says Don't" features the exuberant Barbra Streisand her listeners know and love, "Music of the Night" is a great duet, with the chemistry between her and Michael Crawford just irresistible (FYI, the live recording on her latest release is even better), "As If We Never Said Goodbye" is classic Streisand, as is the next track, "Children Will Listen." Even the other songs sound great and well-sung, though they are not very memorable.
If you didn't like the Broadway Album, this will be of no interest to you. But if you loved the Broadway Album and want a companion album, this is perfect. If you can get over the fact that as a sequel, it's pretty mediocre, then you will appreciate it as an above average recording in its own right.
