I remember when this LP came out in 1967, a lot of jewish people
in New York were shocked that a nice jewish girl from Brooklyn
would put out a Christmas album. I guess that most of these people were expecting a Hannukah album from barbra, but as her
producers would say : "that's not commercial". So she put out a
quality Christmas album. She included a Broadway song "My favorite things" from the "Sound of Music" which you can listen to it all year long...
Some of the other songs you can add to your classical music
collection, such as Gounods Ave Maria, and The Lords Prayer (sung
in Latin). By the way this year the Starbucks released a
Christmas compilation in which Gounouds Ave Maria was sung by
Barbra in English// Why didn't they include this english version
as a "bonus items" in this remastered CD, is still a mystery to
me. She sings these "classical" songs as a mezzo=soprano, and
one is reminded of Maria Callas. Her interpretations here is
more successful than her singing in the classical style in the
"Barbra Classical" lp.
Jewish people should not forget that the best Christmas songs
were in fact written by jews. One example "White Christmas" by
Irving Berlin" and " The Christmas song (chestnuts roasting on
an open fire:" by Mel Torme. These two songs are included here.
Yet, we are still looking forward to the day when Barbra Streisand will record " The Hannukah album", singing all-time
Hannukah favorites, as well as new Hannukah songs by such
songwriters as Marvin Hamschlin, Alan and Marilyn Bergman,
Neil Diamond, Carole King, Barbra Streisand herself (remember
Evergreen), Barry Manilow, Neil Sedaka and all the other great jewish. Where have you gone Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel?
We are expecting a Hannukah song from you and other great
songwriters out there. Do we have to wait "forever" for such
a CD.?.
The song " The best gift" was sung for her newborn baby, Jason
Emanuel Gould, and its simply great.
