Free Music Review: Sublime
Hit: 5 Stars

I do not like the comparisons to Ms. Streisand's early works because this is not an album she could have made 40 years ago with nearly the passion she brings to the songs today. Yes, her voice is not that of a young woman and this album is all the better for it. Ms. Streisand's phrasing takes front stage and her voice is unfiltered and untouched, almost raw, as if she were singing in your living room. The intimacy fits most of the songs perfectly. And yes, there's not one uptempo song her but if there were, it would be horribly out of place. And yes, this is not a jazz album. This is all Streisand backed by jazz influenced musicians. Once again, I think the album is all the better for not having reached. Why would Ms. Streisand need or want to change her style at this time in her career. While she is branching out creatively, she is (as always) trying to find the heart of the song, the drama in the lyric and using her voice as a way of conveying the meaning rather than just as an instrument to reach notes. If you were never a fan of Streisand, this album will not make you one. But if Ms. Streisand's phrasing and voice have ever been the soundtrack to the loves of your life, this album is a must buy. Along with the MOVIE ALBUM, her best work of the decade.

Free Music Review: Her best ever!
Hit: 5 Stars

Having read some of the rave reviews of Streisand's latest album, I decided to put aside some of my feelings about her singing and buy the album. What - somebody who doesn't like Barbara Streisand? Well, I've always had problems with her sometimes whiny, nasal tone and her tendency to do strange things with the notes, like ignore them altogether. This album showed me a completely different side of her as a performer. I think that increasing age has given her increased sensitivity to the core of the music she performs. Even better, her vocal tone is more open and rich (and non-whiny) than I've ever heard from her.

These two disks of (mainly) love songs and torch songs might be the best new jazz vocal album I've heard recently. As a musician - pianist - myself, it's been interesting to compare the fully-orchestrated versions with the quartet versions. They both have merit, but often the quartet version's bare-bones approach is better at illuminating what the song is really about. And Streisand's approach is insightful, emotional, and completely a propos for each song.

If you only buy one album this Christmas, this ought to be the one - but buy the extended version, with both disks. You won't regret it.

Free Music Review: A Natural Wonder
Hit: 5 Stars

How does one describe the indescribable? Convey the unconveyable? Or review the eighth natural wonder of the world?

Can you really describe what it must feel like to be standing over the gorge of the Grand Canyon, the magnificent Victoria Falls in South Africa, or the Harbour of Rio DeJaneiro? Or what it would be like to climb Mount Everest or snorkel through The Great Barrier Reef?

Well like the great Paricutin volcano in Mexico, established as a natural wonder because mankind witnessed its birth, the same could be said about the career of Barbra Streisand which erupted in the 1960s, yet is anything but dormant now.

Her latest contribution to the world is "Love Is The Answer," an impeccably and purposely delivered compilation of songs for every heart string there is. And like the Aurora Borealis, Streisand's vocals soar through the lyrics into your soul like the wave of northern lights dancing across a sky.

This is an album for the ages, and for all ages. And like the other `natural wonders,' Barbra's awesomeness has never been more present and must be experienced. Be prepared to gasp . . . I did!

Free Music Review: Barbra Has Made Me Happy
Hit: 5 Stars

When I first learned that Barbra was gonna record another cd earlier this year I got excited and then when I learned it was coming out in September and that it was gonna be Jazz I got even more excited! I got my deluxe copy today and I'm very happy with these cd's!!!! At first I just wanted the Quartet versions because Barbra has recorded with orchestra's many times and I just wanted to her in an intimate setting, well I do love the Johnny Mandel charts and disc 1 is great for a nice relaxing sunny afternoon.

Now disc 2 has a great supper club late night jazz feel, Barbra's vocals are more raw and you hear the subtle differences with the quartet that you don't hear on disc 1 and there are some slight differences in the vocals on disc 2. The recording\sound on these cd's are fantastic, I listened to both with my headphones on and you can really hear how certain elements where left on the recording. And Barbra's Voice is still in great shape! even with a little rasp here and there, it just adds some emotional depth especially on 'Smoke gets in your eyes'. Thank you Diana Krall for suggesting this idea to Barbra!

Free Music Review: Sublime Streisand!
Hit: 5 Stars

Barbra Streisands "Love is the Answer" is yet another milestone in this divas brilliant career. This age appropriate work by "the actress who sings" is a meloncholy masterpiece in the vein of Frank Sinatras "in the Wee Small Hours" and Shirley Hornes "Heres to Life" albums (both songs represented beautifully here). The album evokes a mood of late night reflection that is consistant from beginning to end. Streisands voice, while changed from previous albums and a little "smokey" around the edges, still has the pure tone, perfect pitch and diction, brilliant phraising and amazing interperative skills that have kept her on top for almost five decades. This theamatic album works as a whole because of excellent song choice and arrangement, restrained production by Diana Krall and subtle yet powerful vocal work by Streisand. The deluxe edition features the same songs with no orchestration that may be essential to the hardcore fan but may not be nessesary for the casual listener. Do yourself a favor, purchace this disk, get a glass of wine, turn down the lights and turn up the quiet to an overwhelming emotional experience. Bravo!
