Free Music Review: Sometimes less is more . . .
Hit: 5 Stars

Skip the single disc version and go straight for this deluxe edition that offers these songs performed with just Diana Krall's quartet. Exquisite. I'm a die-hard Streisand fan but discerning enough to know that every album she's issued isn't golden. I approached this album with a great deal of cynicism (particularly since I've never seen her hype an album as much as this one) but concur that this one ranks among her best. My only quibble: Would it have ruined things to have had a least ONE uptempo tune?

Streisand herself at her Village Vanguard performance referred to coming full-circle with this album. Maybe, maybe not, but make a playlist of her very first album and this one (Disc 2), hit shuffle, and prepare to be blown away by the experience.

Free Music Review: Exquisite and Truthful
Hit: 5 Stars

I am a dyed in the wool fan and have been since I first saw Funny Girl and was blown away by this raw new talent named Barbra. This new CD is exquisite, and what probably had the most impact on me was the "truth" in her voice. She has long spoken about how she always wants to be at the core of the truth of things, and this CD could not be more truthful. Her voice has changed considerably over the years, and there are a few notes on this CD that she would have dubbed over in the past. But this time, she lets the truth be heard and I am even more impressed than ever. To those who think the CD "drags on", well, calm down, sit down, shut up, and listen.
How can anyone be bored with perfect honesty and interpretation? Thanks, Barbra, for giving us a true gem.

Free Music Review: BARBRA is the answer
Hit: 5 Stars

This album, like the singer, is amazing. Again, as she has done over the past 40 years, Barbra Streisand proves that she has a voice like no other.

The warmth is still there and the glorious way she has with the high notes is still nothing less that breath-taking.

In Love Is The Answer, Barbra Streisand covers the songs she should have done a long time ago (in fact one of them, Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most was recorded by her decades ago).

The grace, luxurious sound and romantic feelings are on every song. Of particular note, she does Jacques Brel proud (If You Go Away) and is nothing short of amazing when she tackles that old chestnut In The Wee Small Hours.

Perfect, Perfect, Perfect.

Free Music Review: Simply superb
Hit: 5 Stars

One of Barbra's best. I don't understand the cavils in these reviews that it's not jazz. Streisand isn't now and has never been a jazz singer!

"Where Do You Start?" and "Some Other Time" are especially heartbreaking. "Here's To Life" is quintessential Streisand -- the song's so yummy you could eat it.

I do agree with one of the reviewers here that in "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" her loud crescendo breaking to a sudden softer, lower note doesn't work and, in fact, sounds like a mistake. They should've done a retake. But otherwise, I'm still smitten by the voice, the emotions, the lushness.

(I have only the single CD album -- it alternates quartet versions with string orch versions.)
