Free Music Review: Just like "A Taste of Honey"

Barbra Streisand's first album, released before her star-making turn in Funny Girl, signaled the beginning of a spectacular career. Not only did it peak at an impressive #8 on the album chart and go gold, but it also won the coveted Album of the Year Grammy award. And while Barbra has recorded many albums since then, many of which are superior, this is one of Streisand's most essential early recordings.
Unlike many of her later albums, most of the highlights here are in more uptempo songs. You will probably never hear her have as much fun as she did on "Keepin' Out of Mischief Now" and "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf," or sound as happy as she does on "My Honey's Loving Arms." But there are also some beautiful ballads here to appease fans, such as the great jazz standard "Cry Me a River," the moving "A Sleepin' Bee," and of course the chillingly slow version of "Happy Days are Here Again," which has not only become the standard that she sings at every concert, but also starts the tradition known as the "Streisand chills."
However, I cannot give this album five stars. The other songs I haven't mentioned are substandard or unremarkable, and her vocals, while even more astounding than later on, lack control and jumps from high to low (and vice versa), making it a little irritating after a while. Also, with the song selection being more campy than serious, this album seems too silly at times.
But through it all, this is as good as a debut as anyone can expect. A must for Barbra Streisand's fans, and worth a listen to more casual music listeners too.

Barbra Streisand seemed an "overnight" superstar when she released this debut LP in 1963; two weeks after its release, Streisand was America's best-selling female singer. Within several months, Funny Girl would debut on Broadway... and the rest, as they say, is history. The truth, however, is that Streisand was already a singing sensation in Greenwich Village clubs like Bon Soir and the Blue Angel. Most of the material on this Grammy winner (for Album of the Year) comes from that club act--part of her deal with Columbia was total control over song choices--and it reveals a singer who wasn't about to kowtow to the rock & roll craze; instead, the early Streisand concentrated on standards... and, well, just about anything. The selections range from "A Taste of Honey" to the beautiful "Soon It's Gonna Rain" from The Fantasticks to a song from Disney's Three Little Pigs. It took guts to open with "Cry Me a River," a song already owned by another torch singer (Julie London)--but if the LP proved anything, it was that this Brooklyn gal sure could sing, a fact driven home by her mournful-yet-glorious take on "Happy Days Are Here Again," which soon became a pop standard classic recording of its own. --Bill HoldshipPop Music CDs
