Free Music Review: Experimental music from the lo-fi end of things

This is arguably their best album in terms of studio production. Bardo Pond is an experimental low-fidelity band. They like distortion, delay and modal structures, instead of 3-minute wonders with radio hooks and heartfelt lyrics that would make you buy their products. The first track, "Limerick", runs over ten minutes, and for almost four of them you're sitting there hearing streaming lines of distortion in B while Isobel plays weird scales on flute. The song opens into a weird, echoing space in which the words are hardly discernible. Why buy this album, if their songs are so long and formless? Maybe you're tired of having people tell you what "love" is supposed to "mean", or how music "should" sound. Maybe you're tired of the corporate product tie-in. For me, it was on a rack at a record store, I put on the headphones and went for the experimental sound all at once. When I later saw them live at a small club, and realized that they were as gentle and thoughtful as their music is modal and experimental, I knew I'd made a good investment.
