Free Music Review: Maybe They're Right

I rarely write reviews, but this album truly warranted one.
This, and Barenaked Ladies Are Men which is the other 14 tracks being released in the second CD next year, could be their best total piece of work, and that's saying a lot considering how amazing this band is. I had the pleasure of seeing BNL in concert a few years back when Everything to Everyone was new, and it remains one of my favorite concerts of all time. I can't wait to see this album added to the live show.
This album seems a lot more complete if you listen to the other 14 tracks (and two bonus tracks if you preordered on iTunes) in Barenaked Ladies Are Men along with this, but Barenaked Ladies Are Me stands alone as a great disc. I would liken the second disc to be slightly superior to this one, but this is outstanding nonetheless. The writing is superb, and there's plenty of depth to the lyrics.
It's not exactly the same BNL, but I think that's a strength. I've got all the other releases, if I want One Week, i'll just pop the CD in or fire up the iPod. They've matured greatly it seems since their first release and have kept improving. The musicianship is stunning, and Maybe You're Right with the quiet yelling at the end is some of the best i've ever heard from these guys, and i'd rank it up there as one of their best songs, ever. The acoustic version of this CD, All New Revue - Live at the Glenn Gould Studio, is possibly even better, especially if you're a fan of this, and should be picked up for sure. Maybe You're Right might be a little less powerful on the acoustic disc, but the vocalization at the end is worth the price alone.
Other strong songs on the album are the opener, Adrift, which has a nice, dreamy quality to it; Bank Job, with plenty of allusions that can be drawn to a story about a bank robbery and fault; Easy with its easy acoustic strumming; Bull in a China Shop, with some good writing and pop quality and horns; Everything Had Changed for its plucking; Take It Back, if not on its merits, at least because it utters the line "Think of all the lives saved by plastic knives"; Rule the World with Love, commenting accurately if not ambiguously on America's epic failures in international policy since 2001; and finally Wind It Up, which is a straight up rock song, or at least about as much of a rock song as you'll get from these guys. It's extremely catchy and well done.
I'd put this as a strong buy, it's my favorite release of 2006 without a doubt. And if you do become a fan, the second part to it is going to blow you away, as it's even better.
