I've really enjoyed some of Barry Manilow's recent work. His "Here @ the Mayflower" CD was excellent. This one doesn't work for me. Barry holds the notes a long time; and his voice warbles in a style that may have been quite the bomb in the early 50s. In this setting, it only draws attention to how superficially he attacks most of these songs. "It's All in the Game" was a #1 record for Tommy Edwards in 1958, but is particularly awful here as Manilow warbles on all of the ending words and stretches for notes like on "looking dim." I do actually like "Venus" that was a #1 song for Frankie Avalon, who was probably one of the less talented singers of the 50s rock era but had a way of injecting personality into his recordings. I like the harps and the oohs of Connie Nassios' heavenly choir background vocals on this track. Manilow sounds interested on his duet with Phyllis McGuire on "Sincerely/Teach Me Tonight" in what is a good track. "Young at Heart" is a major offender with vocals that probably would not survive to finals on American Idol. The guitar reverb on "All I Have to Do Is Dream" is great. I still prefer the Everly Brothers' version that spent 5 weeks @ #1 in 1958. "What a Diff'rence a Day Made" had me running for Dinah Washington. This disc flew to #1 for Manilow; so I hoped for some truly inspired versions of songs from this delightful era. Instead, Manilow's reaching for the schlock rock crown. The arrangements and musicianship on the disc is fine, but this is not a disc with which I connected. After the Matthew Sweet & Susannah Hoff's' 1960s covers CD, I'd been looking forward to Manilow's 60s disc. However, it's going to have to be quite a budget buy before I'll go there after hearing what he did to the 50s. Taxi!
The Greatest Songs of the Fifties Poster
Clive Davis's ear earns him more accolades than most of his talents' vocal chords. Now it's time to give it up for his enterprising instincts. The Greatest Songs of the Fifties arrives on the heels of another of the famous producer's backward-looking projects, the ubiquitous, uber-successful Great American Songbook series by Rod Stewart. The short story: same vibe, different era. With songs like "All I Have to Do Is Dream," "Venus," and "Unchained Melody" (first recorded in the '50s but best known for its '60s Righteous Brothers rendition), Manilow sidesteps the stuff that rocked the sock hops in favor of cheek-to-cheek selections--the better to remind longtime fans of his nostalgia-steeped '70s hits. Overall, the approach works, especially when the bona fide '50s legend Phyllis McGuire steps in to heat up the "Teach Me Tonight/Sincerely" medley, and Manilow swings across genres to lovingly tackle Dinah Washington's "What a Diff'rence a Day Made." Vocally, a warm haze covers these tracks; whether it's there to evoke fuzzier times or to mask a voice that's gone slightly south is unclear. What couldn't be more crystal, though, is Manilow and Davis's commitment to first-class, sophisticated record-making. --Tammy La GorcePop Music CDs
