Free Music Review: Still an American Icon

First, let me preface my review by saying that I have been a Barry Manilow fan for 31 years. Manilow is an all or nothing propsition: you either love him or you hate him. I have watched Manilow explore the many phases of his musical talent and have been taken along on quite a ride while receiving a musical education along the way. If if were not for Manilow, I doubt I would have garnered an interest in the music of Broadway, appreciated the music of Frank Sinatra, fell in love with the music of the big bands of the 40's, or been romanced by the songs of the 50's. Manilow opens up a whole new musical interest for me with each album he releases. Yes, I enjoy his own material most and the songs that are truly his are the best, but I love all music and appreciate Manilow's efforts to keep all music alive, not just his own. While Manilow fans are chidded as much as Manilow himself, they do not live in a musical bubble but are among the most open-minded and appreciative fans of all genres of music. In the case of the "Songs of the 50's" CD, Manilow's voice is still strong and his range excellent,however, it is thinning a bit. He just doesn't have the big, full sound he did ten years ago, but he has chosen his songs well, as any singer would, and the CD selections showcase his style and talent. I feel almost foolish mentioning his voice in a world where other artist thrive on lack of vocal qualtiy. However, the change is noticible only to a fan who has followed his career closely through the years. The arrangements are lush and beautifully orchestrated. The production quality of Manilow's CDs is always the best and this one is well balanced and full. I am not fond personally of the songs chosen for a couple of the tracks, for example, " It's All in the Game" and "Young at Heart," however, it is a matter of the lyrics and melodies just not touching my heart. "Venus" is adorable and uplifting. It makes you want to throw the top down on the convertible and go cruising in the spring sunshine. "Beyond the Sea" is the best version I have ever heard of this song. It never appealed to me before, but Manilow's airy arrangement and poignant voice captures the longing for a distant love in this song. "Unchained Melody" has always been a favorite song of mine. It can only be imagined how Manilow's version makes my heart pound. This is probably the best performed song on the CD. It fits Manilow's sensuous lyrical style as well as his flair for the big dramatic ending. I was not born until the 60's so one would think that Manilow's "Summer of '78" CD would appeal more to me than this one, however, the voice/song match, arrangements, and production make this Manilow's best cover album to date. Check it out, even if you are not a bonafide Manilow fan, you won't be disappointed.

Now it's time to give it up for his enterprising instincts. The Greatest Songs of the Fifties arrives on the heels of another of the famous producer's backward-looking projects, the ubiquitous, uber-successful Great American Songbook series by Rod Stewart. The short story: same vibe, different era. With songs like "All I Have to Do Is Dream," "Venus," and "Unchained Melody" (first recorded in the '50s but best known for its '60s Righteous Brothers rendition), Manilow sidesteps the stuff that rocked the sock hops in favor of cheek-to-cheek selections--the better to remind longtime fans of his nostalgia-steeped '70s hits. Overall, the approach works, especially when the bona fide '50s legend Phyllis McGuire steps in to heat up the "Teach Me Tonight/Sincerely" medley, and Manilow swings across genres to lovingly tackle Dinah Washington's "What a Diff'rence a Day Made." Vocally, a warm haze covers these tracks; whether it's there to evoke fuzzier times or to mask a voice that's gone slightly south is unclear. What couldn't be more crystal, though, is Manilow and Davis's commitment to first-class, sophisticated record-making. --Tammy La Gorce
