Free Music Notes for Barry White : All-Time Greatest Hits

Free Music Review: Most complete hits anthology but less could be more
Hit: 5 Stars

There are a number of Barry White greatest hits packages available in the market, the most recent being "The Ultimate Collection". I decided on the older "All Time Greatest Hits" compilation because it is the most comprehensive, including all of Barry White's 70s R & B hits and in chronological order rather than in the haphazard hit and miss way such collections are often presented. As the grandfather of heavily syncopated smooth disco soul of the 70s, Barry is without peer. Barring the opening Love Unlimited instrumental which has sadly lost its appeal through commercial overuse and consequently degenerated into muzak or jingle, the first half of the compilation confirms that for the kind of music he was making, Barry was peerless and could do no wrong when he was tearing up the charts. "I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little More, Baby", "I've Got So Much To Give", "Never, Never Gonna Give You Up", "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love, Babe" and "You're The First, My Last, My Everything" still sound as fresh and terrific today as they did more than 25 years ago. But by the time we get to "I'm Qualified To Satisfy You", the listening experience becomes interminable because the songs begin to sound the same, except that they're of far less distinguished quality. Even "It's Ecstasy When You Lay Down Next To Me" which was something of a latter day chart stormer for Barry fails to impress. The slower "Playing Your Game, Baby" breaks the monotony momentarily to provide some relief but the CD's best moments have long passed. Covering Billy Joel's "Just The Way You Are" isn't a good idea. This is a classic case of less being more and the law of diminishing returns setting in once past the optimum point. While Barry White fans will no doubt disagree - and I symphathise - the casual listener may be better served by a more concise greatest hits package concentrating on his early smash hits. But you can't please everyone. "All Time Greatest Hits" is still a wonderful anthology of Barry's hit making years and great value for money. What more can you ask for ?

Free Music Review: There Is Only One Barry White!
Hit: 5 Stars

Once upon a time, a 17 year old young man called Barry Eugene Carter jailed for four months for theft. After coming out he left the gang he was part of and dedicated his time for music, And I'm ever greatful for that choise. Eventually he apapted the name Barry White and became a song writer in the 60's, he only had marginal success writing songs for Bobby Fuller among others, but when he created the band "Love Unlimited" with 3 female vocalists he was ready for the next step. The band had some success in the early 70's, White wrote, arranged and produced the music, in 1973 they record company asked White to grab the mic and and go from backruond singer to lead singer. The rest is history.

During the 70's Barry White gave us loads of great, romantic soul numbers, evrything from disco songs to slow jamz. With his deep voice "The Maestro" became a mythical romantic soul-singer and his music is still played heavily today, unfortunately he passed away in 2003 and there is huge vacuum left after him. Some of his biggest hits include "Can't Get Enough of Your Love", "Honey Please Can't You See" "Am I Qualified to Satisfy You" "I've Got so Much to Give" and uptepo disco song "Let The Music Play" wonderful romantic "Never Never Gonna Give You up" that was later covered by Lisa Stansfield. The Instrumental "Love Theme" that was a massive hit. "You See the Trouble With Me" "Your Sweetness is my Weakness" and ofcourse "You're the First, My last, My Everything"

This collection pretty much covers the biggest hits from White, and they give a good look at his greatness with 20 diffrent hits. If you're new to his music, start here, but even if you want a good collection check this out.

Free Music Review: Barry White's GH's is Pure Ecstasy!
Hit: 5 Stars

There are a lot of artists that can make me dance. However, there are very few that can make me slow dance. I'm talking about taking the person you love by the waist, drawing them closer and slowly moving to the music. The kind of song that inspires mental and soul intimacy. The kind where you feel your loved one's heart beating from sheer bliss. The heartbeat that races for your touch. Look into their eyes and see your reflection and know that it is causing that heartbeat.

Barry White is the man that does this with his music. There is no doubt that it is lovemaking music. The voice is undeniable. The deep resonating passion and depth. When he says something you feel he means it. Saying I love you is easy. Saying I love you and making someone feel the words as if being touched physically, now that's a accomplishment! I feel physically touched by this music. Heavy, isn't it?

Stellar tracks to get the mood going include "Love's Theme", "Never Never GOnna Give You Up", "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love". Each one sets the tone for a man in love, wanting love, and wanting you.

Then there are the tracks that just put it all out there. Barry tells you what he wants. Songs about desire and lust. Like, " It's Ecstasy When You Lay Down Next To Me", "I'll Do For You Anything You Want Me To", and "Your Sweetness Is My Weakness"

This 20 song compilation of Barry's hits is a MUST BUY for true fans. Each one is good, and makes for great romance music. Give it a listen and you will see why Barry is known for his deep, throaty vocals.

Free Music Review: RIP Barry White
Hit: 5 Stars

While never a big fan of disco, I have always liked Barry White's blend of dance music combined with classic R & B, and this 20 - song cd does an excellent job of collecting the best of his unique style of music.

For a solid collection of hits, this album holds up quite well. "Love's Theme", "Never, Never Gonna Give You Up", "I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little More, Babe", "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love Babe", "You're The First, The Last, My Everything", "What Am I Gonna Do With You", and "It's Ectasy (When You Lay Down Next Me)" are all included on this cd. Also included on this cd are several songs that were not successful on the Hot 100 but were hits on the R & B charts, including "Your Sweetness Is My Weakness", "Oh What A Night For Dancing", and the excellent "You See The Trouble With Me". Another standout is his gorgeous cover of the Billy Joel standard, "Just The Way You Are". I actually prefer this version to Joel's original version.

I highly recommend. It has possibly the most complete collection of Barry White's material. (My only gripe is that they did not include the longer version of "I'm Gonna Love You Just A little More Babe" that I heard on the radio the other day). It is also great party music. I played at my grandmother's house on New Year's Eve and everyone there started dancing. The bottom line is that this is a perfect collection of hit singles from a man who redefined soul and R & B music forever.

Free Music Review: A great collection of R&B, Soul, Jazz, and Rhythm
Hit: 5 Stars

This is definitely the must-haves 2 go get. I've been awaiting to review so long so I purchased it at Wal-Mart 3 yrs. ago. I've been a fan to Barry since I got him instantly by listening to the CD. It has great songs incl. "It's Ecstasy When You Lay Down Next to Me.", "Can't Get Enough of Your Love Babe", the remake of Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are", "Love's Theme", etc.

Now that's he gone, he still remain one of my inspirations to follow alongside Marvin Gaye, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, 2Pac, Biggie, Donny Hathaway, Grover Washington Jr., Quincy Jones, Miles Davis, Musiq, Jon B., Donell Jones, and many others. In 10 years, he will be remembered 'cause he monitored a generation of R&B and Soul.

I highly recommend this CD to those who want to hear real good music like from the 'ol school and beyond. The must-haves I have on my CD player are Kanye West's THE COLLEGE DROPOUT, Miles Davis' KIND OF BLUE, Grover Washington, Jr.'s THE BEST OF GROVER WASHINGTON, JR., Alicia Keys' SONGS IN A MINOR and THE DIARY OF ALICIA KEYS, Guru's JAZZMATAZZ, VOL. 1, David Sanborn's PEARLS, Musiq's SOULSTAR, Justin Timberlake's JUSTIFIED, OutKast's SPEAKERBOXXX/THE LOVE BELOW, Nelly's SWEAT/SUIT, R. Kelly's CHOCOLATE FACTORY, and so on and on.

If those that don't like Barry or haven't even heard of him, I urge u to go check him out, 'cause he's the man.
