Free Music Review: Elfman vs. Goldenthal and Elfman wins!
Hit: 2 Stars

I bought this cd for two reasons: 1. I collect all superhero music; 2. I liked the Two-Face theme. However, Goldenthal is all wrong for Batman! His music is always on the technical side and doesn't actually try to understand the characters, but is just weird for weirdness' sake. Elfman always writes his music with the emotions of the characters in mind, something Goldenthal doesn't even seem to care about. His Batman theme is too campy(with the exception of the first track which is pretty good, but not great,) the Riddler music is just plain annoying, His circus music is woefully inadequate, and his action music is all noise and no substance( even Elfman's noisy cues contain substance!). The Two-Face music is the most interesting theme on this cd even though it is a little silly for a disfigured and brooding character. If you want good superhero music, check out Batman, Batman Returns, or either Spiderman scores, coincidentally all Elfman!

Free Music Review: An Upper-class listen
Hit: 5 Stars

Elliot Goldenthal's score to the movie `Batman Forever' is written with such craft and vigour that for the average uneducated reviewer (see below for examples) it will be "... too bizarre. It is a totally incoherent listen." In fact Elliot's score is a brillante take on Elfman's score to the original score. The themes are solid and you have the usual (that is for Goldenthal, not every other composer) dynamic compositions that are a trademark of his work. The score has a more military and upbeat feel to it, but still having extremely original and unique features: violent Trumpet and French horn trills, sweeping brass clusters from the lower end of the orchestra, and manic piccolo flutes are key elements to the sound scape.
No, it is not an easy listen. But for those who like to be challenged with dynamic and higher quality music than this is the CD for you.

Free Music Review: Weird and disturbing
Hit: 2 Stars

I want Danny Elfman back! Neither of Goldenthal's Batman scores can compare with the original Batman (although Batman and Robin compares favorably with Batman Returns). For a better buy, grab a hold of the bootleg/promo of Batman and Robin. This CD is just too bizarre. It is a totally incoherent listen. Buy Batman (Danny Elfman). You will definitely be satisfied with that.

Free Music Review: Elliot Goldenthal forever!
Hit: 5 Stars

After the success of the first 2 Batman films with director Tim Burton and composer Danny Elfman, the latest films pair director Joel Schumacher with composer Elliot Goldenthal. Elfman's famous Batman march made the dark knight famous and Goldenthal simply adds to it. His theme for Batman is similar to Elfman's, but as Elfman's was more dark and ominous, Goldenthal's is more brash and vibrant. The theme itself is an 8 note brass fanfare that can be heard every time the dark knight does something heroic. "Main Titles & Fanfare" introduces the theme powerfully with might and sheer orchestral power. Other cues that showcase this brillant theme include "Fledermausmarschmusik" (whew!) with it stated in march style, "Victory", "Descent", and "Holy Rusted Metal". One thing about Elliot Goldenthal that I always like is that, like Thomas Newman, he is always coming up with something unique and original, as so many composers today are lacking. Several unique and fun dance tunes in different styles are present in "Mr. E's Dance Card" and "Two-Face Three Step". "Nygma Variations" showcases Goldenthal's unique writing talents a la Bernard Herrmann. "Gotham City Boogie" and "Under the Top" contains strange and unique (i've used that word a lot haven't I?) rhythms and textures. A brief love theme can be found in "Mouth to Mouth Nocturne". As Elfman did for the first Batman film, Goldenthal utilizes a powerful finale in "Batterdammerung" with lots of swirling strings and flutes played along with the fanfare. Elliot Goldenthal did an outstanding job taking over the music from Danny Elfman. His style is unique (there's that word again) and highly original.

Free Music Review: Not bad, but we're too used to the original
Hit: 3 Stars

The Batman Forever score (like the movie) was different than the previous two installments. Goldenthal's themes and instruments introduced a new, jazzier type of Batman music. Many thought Danny Elfman's original Batman theme was one of the best ever. The music was so colossal, it was hard to imagine a Batman movie without the theme that we are so used to hearing. Goldenthal did what he could. The Batman Forever score is not bad at all. In fact, it is good music. The only problem is that Danny Elfman's music for Batman is just simply better. For this reason, many fans did not accept this score. Still, there are enough tracks on the CD to make this worth buying if you are a Batman fan. Opening titles, and the final two tracks are very good while they express heriosm and the "new" theme.
