Free Music Review: Outstanding film soundtrack score

This is a review of the score and not the film, for that is what this is, a CD of the film's soundtrack score written by Shirley Walker. Ms. Walker, who unfortunately passed away in 2006, was both an outstanding performer (a soloist with the San Francisco Symphony in high school!) and a gifted composer. She came to film composition when she played keyboard synthesizers for Carmine Coppola's original score for "Apolcalypse Now." Later, she became the first female film composer to earn a solo credit for a major motion picture. In 1992, she began her long association with the Batman series when she started to write for the television series. Since Warner Brothers owned the rights to the original film score, they initially used Danny Elfman's score for the animated series. However, Shirley Walker wrote numerous "cues" and later wrote the main theme when Warner dropped the Elfman themes. When Warner Brothers produced the first animated feature film based on the television series, they hired Shirley Walker to write the score.
The film opens with a dramatic pounding of tympani followed by an A capella chorus, which sounds as if they're singing Russian, the melody is a variation of the television and film themes. To display her humorous side, Walker later revealed in an interview that the words are the names of famous people spoken in reverse (I'm not certain if she said she used names like Bach and Beethoven or if they are the names of fellow composers). The score is peppered with this distant ethereal chorus that reminds me of Tchaikovsky's opening to the 1812 Overture. As Elfman did with his Batman score, Walker gives the film a gothic feel with her cues that add power and majesty to the image on the screen. While the cues are rather short, they are nonetheless, great melodic contributions to some of the best film scores ever produced for Hollywood, and join composers like Herrmann, Williams, Goldsmith, Barry, Jarre, Newman, Waxman, Elfman and many others who have made great contributions to this artform.
