Free Music Review: Best Show has Best Score
Hit: 5 Stars

I'll be brief- this soundtrack is not the "normal" sci-fi affair- it feels more like a anthropological study of music, from "tribal" to ancient European with elements of Oceania, Africa, America (again, ancient), and Asia mixed in. With track 30, for example, my friend thought it was Chinese, but I'm thinking more Italian- of course, half way through, it become a more primal song...

If you're looking here, its for one of four reasons- you like/love the show, you're been directed by friends/family, you like superb and original music, or you misclicked. In either event:

1st reason) Buy the CD
2nd reason) Buy the CD, and ask to borrow the DVD set from the person who recommended the show to you, (before you get it yourself)
3rd reason) This is it- this will be one of the best CDs you get this year. (But give the show a chance- best show on TV in several years)
4th reason) Seriously, you should try the series- the 1st Season DVDs come with the pilot miniseries, and if you don't like Sci-Fi, don't worry- you don't have to: great storytelling is great storytelling, regardless of the genre.

I've had the CD about two weeks now, and I've listened to the whole track, end to end, at least fifty times, (not to mention the repeating of certain tracks). My friends and family who've heard it, regardless of them watching the show, want this CD, (and they range from Vietnamese to Nigerian, not to mention American). (Plus, its a good thing I have both DVD sets, as they're both borrowed out...) This CD will not disappoint, should you like something better than the current pop music media we have now.

So say we all.

Free Music Review: BG Music Reflects the Essence of Being Human
Hit: 5 Stars

The new BG is ultimately about what it means to be human in a world threatened by non-humans who appear human and who are your best friends or your worse enemies or, or, or ... BG's ultimately about the essence of life, not of machines or explosions or tactics or politics. And Bear's wonderful, varietal, colorful, subtle, sophisticated and always surprising work on Season One reflects this essence.

"Wander My Friends" -- baleful, soulful piece. Time for tears.
"Battlestar Muzaktica" -- cheeky, smooth, unexpected. Time for laughter!
"The Dinner Party" -- classy, clean, sparse. Time for a little sherry.
"Battlestar Operatica" -- sneaky as a Cylon, hidden messages. Time for a chuckle.
"Passacaglia" -- Time for awe. Everyone else has mentioned this track and for good reason. It's the piece that, when heard on TV, I, and everyone else I hope, knew that we were in the presence of something quite different -- real epic television and a synching of creative vision that will continue to impress us every week.

Bear creates from the entire range of human experience. We could not have hoped for, or received, a better continuation of the unique sounds created for the pilot mini-series.

As exec producer David Eick says in the liner notes, the series was to change the face of science fiction. Bear's interpretative, evocative creations have changed the face of teevee scoring, and are a large part of why BG is the best fracking series on television today.

Long live the Bear.

Free Music Review: Is this the best soundtrack ever composed for a tv show?
Hit: 5 Stars

I love soundtracks, I collect only the best. Get "Battlestar Galactica: Season One [SOUNDTRACK]" disk, not the other, "Battlestar Galactica [SOUNDTRACK]" by Richard Gibbs
The Season One disk is enigmatic and fascinating.
I didn't really like this new tv series at first..."Space Drama...oh boy...," I thought... I only watched it because it sandwiched the SG-1 shows.
I'll get to the point. The music keeps getting better and better with every episode, so much so that I have become spellbound by this show. It's the music that does this to you. It couldn't possibly be more perfect. Bear Mccreary is a genius. I have often thought to myself that I could probably be a successful soundtrack composer, but after listening to this Soundtrack and the new standard it sets, I wouldn't want to embarrass myself now...
Bear McCreary uses a huge spectrum of sounds: from simple and complex drum beats, Celtic sounds, Middle-Eastern flutes, to creating compositions that would even impress Bach: 24. Passacaglia, 27. Shape of Things to Come. His timing for soft silence is also perfect and used appropriately: 19. Baltar Panics, 14. Baltar Speaks With Adama, each creates suspense without overwhelming your senses with cheap shock. Congratulations to Bear for creating an amazing, suspenseful, progressive composition which smoothly transitions complex storylines and subplots with perfection.
I am very eager to see how the music on this show progresses...

Free Music Review: Impressive
Hit: 5 Stars

I must say I have found Battlestar Galactica series on SciFi to be one of the more suprisingly enjoyable and well written shows on television but all of this is alreadly known. The soundtrack developed in either a collaborative or independently and cooperatively by Mr. Richard Gibbs and Mr. Bear McCreary are both excellent.

The bulk of the CD is composed of interesting hybrids of tribal/Arabian/European classical pieces and North African influences. There are a fair amount of pieces which are quite nice but somewhat contextual and situational to the show but are nonetheless quite good there are two exceptions, however, which prompted my purchase, I recently saw some parts of "Kobol's Last Gleaming (II)" and the pieces, 'Passacaglia' and 'The Shape Of Things To Come' were set into the background of a rather pivotal moment and quite frankly I was amazed and to my suprise moved, needless to say I was here rather instantaeously.

These were two beautifully composed and performed pieces, and at first I kept thinking to myself these must be covers or variants of something by Bach or Handel but I researched a little bit and he managed to pull of a moment of perfect beauty that sounds like it was composed by one of the great masters so it would seem at least to my ears that Mr. McCreary has done something rare in music let alone television soundtracks.

Free Music Review: A Good Addition to the Collection of All BSG Fans
Hit: 5 Stars

A few years ago when the new Battlestar Galactica (referred from now on as 'BSG') miniseries aired I watched it, being the SciFi fan that I am. I wasn't around for the original series, so I wasn't a fan of the show already. I thought the miniseries was ok; but wasn't overly excited when the series was announced. Since it was on right after Stargate, I decided to start watching. After a few episodes, I was hooked. What did it, if the characters and setting were the same as the miniseries? The music.

Nothing against Richard Gibbs (composer of the miniseries' soundtrack) but I found Bear McCreary's take on BSG to have a lot of energy and variety. My favorite tracks are some of the more off-the-wall ones, such as the lamenting bagpipes of "Wander My Friends" or the vocals in "Battlestar Operatica." Other faves include the US & UK "Main Titles," the modern touch of "Battlestar Muzaktica," and the ominous tones of "Passacaglia" and "The Shape Of Things To Come."

If you're not a fan of the series, a lot of the meaning may be lost on you, but if you're a fan of SciFi music, you should check it out. For those of you who are fans of BSG, the soundtrack is a great way to enjoy the show while you're driving, working at your computer, or doing other things that prohibit you from actually watching it; definitely pick it up.
