Free Music Notes for GothamFree Music Review: Godfathers of Goth Rock Hit: 5 StarsOkay children...this is a killer album. If I had to own only one Bauhaus recording, it would be this one. Bauhaus are the godfathers of goth ROCK--they initiated a genre. My Dying Bride are METAL, not rock--they are gothic doom metal, and the godfathers of gothic doom are Black Sabbath. Anathema, Paradise Lost, and My Dying Bride are all goth-METAL. ALSO "gothic" is a theme, not a form of music. Movies (styled in the film noir tradition)like Bladerunner, Hellraiser, and the Crow are "gothic." Film noir means "dark film" which alludes to dark cinematic overtones. Many bands are styled goth--The Cure, black metal like Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth, Katatonia, all considered "goth" or goth influenced. Architecture (as in old cathedrals) are styled "gothic." Stop fighting kiddies. You don't even have valid arguments.
Free Music Review: Real Goth returns Hit: 5 StarsI bought Gotham for purely nostalgic reasons and though that, with Peter Murphy's mellowed post Bauhaus ventures, the music would be a watered down Bauhaus imitation. As it turns out the gang is back in great form! Peter Murphy can still growl and purr with the best of em' and the rest of the band sounded fantastic as well. Since I was unable to see them live before or after their "re-birth" these discs(my copy of "Press the eject..." is on vinyl and, sadly, my turntable is long gone.) are a fine relic to add to my CD collection.
Free Music Review: Yes, its Goth, and yes, its brilliant. Hit: 5 StarsI don't get the point of all you people saying that this isn't goth music. If My Dying Bride etc. don't sound like this then that means My Dying Bride ARE NOT GOTHS. They must be something else. Bauhaus more or less invented the genre, so get used to it. As for this, well it is spectacular. 20 years later and all the songs are played to perfection. As the man says, this is all we ever wanted. Pity they can't stay together long enough to do more new stuff.
Free Music Review: Very Nice Hit: 4 StarsI bought this cd on accident, but I completely fell in love with it. I'm not really into live music at all, but this was really something else. I was MESMORIZED by the live version of "Bela Legosi's Dead"! I was numb throughout the whole song. And I still can't stop listening to "Ziggy Stardust." Other than the few shrieking girls and boys in the background, the cd was wonderful. I wouldn't exactly recommend it to new fans of Bauhaus, but it is a great addition to any cd collection.
Free Music Review: A classic Hit: 5 StarsI saw the Resurrection Tour in Boston, MA and thought it was phenomenal. The Gotham CD's capture the essence of that tour very well with an added bonus of a Dead Can Dance studio recorded cover. A must have for any Bauhaus fan and for those that want to re-play the Resurrection tour.
