Free Music Notes for In the Flat FieldFree Music Review: The birth of Goth Hit: 4 StarsI love Bauhaus and this is the best place to start for them. This has always been my favorite from them and this edition of the cd they have included a handful of bonus material with the album. The cd opens with their 1979 single Dark Entries which is a hard rocking song with fast guitar and fast drumming. One of my all time favorites from Peter and the boys. Next we hear the first song on the album, Double Dare, which sounds somewhat tribal and you can hear Peter commanding you "I dare you!" There are so many great songs on this disc as far as the actual In The Flat Field album goes my favorite might be God In An Alcove or In The Flat Field. This is a very strong album from the first real Goth band. Bonus songs which are really strong are the T. Rex cover of Telegram Sam, Rosegarden Funeral Of Sores and my pesonal favorite Terror Couple Kill Colonel. Anyone new to Bauhuas start with this album then go from there. Also I would recomend Peter Murphy's solo albums as well as Love And Rockets. if you want to hear where goth all started then look and listen right here.
Free Music Review: one of their best - and their first! Hit: 5 Starsand you get the original (non air-brushed out)
penis cover too. a great disc
I still pull this LP out, that's how cool it is/was.
"back in the good 'ole days when dancing meant exploding!"
PS (not goth) just great rock from a cool band
Free Music Review: beautiful death, screaming Hit: 5 Starsit might be stupid to try and define the goth genre, but if there is such a thing this album should be first on the list. bauhaus has an incredible way of using their rock instruments to create great moments of pain and release. they have characteristically twangy guitars and sharp drums, and they know how to use it to inflict pain. however, even if it is artificial pain, they certainly managed to use their instruments in an immensely creative way to convey their deathly fantasies. peter murphy's voice gets on some people's nerves, but i think he's a really amazing vocalist with harmonized screams and hurls. and they kick ass for a rock band as well. this album is really essential for any punk/goth fan, especially if you like your music dark.
Free Music Review: ABSOLUTE MUST !!!!!! Hit: 5 StarsThis is probably THE most corrosive after punk/goth album ever recorded. You'll feel as if a pint of nitric acid were being poured inside your ears.Everything, especially guitars,is distorted to the point of saturating madness, yet the resulting songs are clear, tight gut wrenching power punches.Bauhaus at their very best in my humble opinion, perhaps not a song by song best (hey Bela Lugosi is earlier, remember ? ) but thebest heavy goth album ever put together by a band.
Free Music Review: Great first album, probably their best effort. Hit: 4 StarsAlthough the tracklisting is similar in many places to the "Singles Vol. 1" album, I'd choose this one between the two. You get all the memorable songs from that disc (outside of Bela Lugosi's Dead, which is probably their most well known song).
I'd just ignore the Cure-fanboyish rant from "whatever (lost)" below. The Cure and Joy Division are very respectable bands but Bauhaus deserves just as much credit as any band for moving this "style" ahead. Just because some simpler brains won't be able to tolerate something beyond your standard oh-so-glum goth stuff from those other two aformentioned bands doesn't mean Bauhaus isn't outstanding. Just because Bauhaus throws in a few curveballs here and there doesn't mean they're any less respectable or less worthy of their lofty status among fans.
