Free Music Review: A LITTLE UNEVEN BUT A GOOD INTRODUCTION TO THEIR MUSIC Hit: 3 StarsTHIS WAS MY "RE INTRODUCTION" TO THE BEACH BOYS MUSIC BACK IN THE 80'S (PRIOR TO THAT, I HAD OWNED 'BEST OF THE BEACH BOYS). THIS COLLECTION INTRODUCED ME TO A LOT OF COOL SONGS THAT WEREN'T ON 'BEST OF' SUCH AS 'CAROLINE,NO','DO IT AGAIN','DON'T WORRY BABY'. THE ONE COMPLAINT AGAINST THIS COLLECTION IS THAT THE SONGS THEY PUT ON THERE FROM THE 70'S WERE NOT VERY GOOD AND THE BEACH BOYS DID A LOT OF GOOD STUFF IN THOSE YEARS TOO
Free Music Review: There's a party going down at the rock and roll show. Hit: 4 StarsThis is a good compilation of Beach Boys songs. But there are a few curious choices made in song selection. Why is the minor b-side "409" included when there are many bigger hits that were left off? Don't get me wrong, I love "409", but it's not a "greatest hit". But the main fault here is the inclusion of two mediocre new recordings at the end of the CD. Still, it's easy to find a cheap used copy of this, so it's worth getting.
Free Music Review: "beat the Beatles"?? ....that's a good one... Hit: 4 StarsFirst things first: this is a very good complilation on the whole and I agree with some reviewers that at least a couple of "substitutions" might have raised the rating to 5 stars. Probably THE definitive one is the recent Sounds of summer.
But these comments putting a kind of rivalry between the B.Boys and the Beatles are not only useless but stupid: it wasn't a horse race but an artful competition that led to fantastic music from both parts. Besides, great mutual admiration between Brian Wilson and P.McCartney.
But what can we answer to a previous reviewer? Well, just for fun... so maybe the Beach Boys have more than 100 "classics", they have surely the best bass player in pop/rock history (Carol Kaye???), one of the best solid/steady drummers in rock (ask Vinnie Colaiuta), a unique blend of elegance and personality in lead guitar (ask Gilmour or Clapton), and.....well, the 4th one was a certain John Lennon....
"The Beach Boys beat the Beatles"......give me a break a keep listening ONLY to the Beach Boys.....they're really good!!!
Free Music Review: One of their best numerous collections. Hit: 4 StarsWell, until "Sounds Of Summer" was released, this was the best and longest hits album they had. "Endless Summer" is excellent also, but this adds the "Pet Sounds" tracks, even though it omits other songs. Also recently released was the "Greatest Hits" volumes 1-3, good, but less tracks on each disc. Basically it's just a matter of what songs you want. Can you deal without "Kokomo", then this is fine, otherwise get the 30 track "Sounds Of Summer". Or "Endless Summer" and "Pet Sounds" are a good combo.
