Free Music Notes for The Warmth of the Sun

Free Music Review: a great follow-up to Sounds Of Summer
Hit: 4 Stars

This CD seems to be a "companion" to the Sounds Of Summer compilation, as it focuses more on songs that didn't really become "hits," and not a one of the songs on it appears on Sounds Of Summer. Again, most of the material is from the group's '60s period, although it has more of their later stuff than Sounds Of Summer does. Again, the sound quality is excellent, and there are some "new" stereo remixes. Most of the songs that are remixed on this CD are '65 recordings that, as far as I know, were never previously available in any true stereo versions. The engineers seem to have "cleaned up" the recording of "Wendy," taking out the coughing and talking in the background, and making the instruments clearer. The one remix that I don't care so much for, is the remix of "Break Away." (This remix is not "new," as it was previously released on the 2-CD "Hawthorne, CA" compilation.) It's not bad, but I prefer the original stereo mix. That's about the only negative thing that I have to say about this CD. The CD even features a few post-'60s songs that are not on Greatest Hits Vol. 3: Best Of The Brother Years, which is the only currently-available compilation that focuses on that period exclusively. While Sounds Of Summer is, in my opinion, the best single-disc Beach Boys "best-of" available, The Warmth Of The Sun comes in a close second.

Free Music Review: For those wanting to dig a little deeper...
Hit: 4 Stars

I'm not a huge Beach Boys fan, owning only The Sounds of Summer compilation and Pet Sounds, so I'm guessing this disc is designed for someone like me. I like the band, but I don't want to own everything they've done.

This set covers the pre-Pet Sounds era well and shows off Brian Wilson's production and composing ability in songs such as "Let Him Run Wild" and "The Warmth of the Sun," but it also makes a case for the Boys in the 70s through songs like "It's Ok" and the fantastic ballad "Forever" by Dennis Wilson.

There are some goofy inclusions like the cover version of "California Dremaing" which sounds stuck in the mid-80s when it was recorded. More often that not, this set shows that the Boys had great songs before and after Pet Sounds. The before most people know, but most people wrote the Beach Boys off in the 70s and by the 80s it does seem like they were pretty much bankrupt creatively.

Having said that, this disc shows the creativity and beauty of a band sometimes remembered only for songs about California girls and surfing. There's much more to the band than that.

Free Music Review: Great selection but could use an additional CD
Hit: 4 Stars

I love this new cd by the Beach Boys with the addition of the new stereo mixes of a few songs and 5 little known songs from the seventies. Why no songs from Pet Sounds and why no Surfer Girl, Little Duece Coupe, My Car Club--I guess there is so many great songs to choose from it was hard to put them on 1 cd--should have been 2 cds--live tracks from the seventies should have been included and I know there are other unreleased versions of their songs. The few surprises here show that there is alot of other unreleased stuff out there and it should be released. I am a true fan of the Beach Boys and want other unreleased versions out. Need to keep hearing the Wilson Brothers as much as I can and not the current Beach Boys (mike Love-Bruce Johnston) playing those great songs without any Wilson brothers. At least we have brian for he is the only real Beach Boy-Mike Love is good but he is cannot compare with Brian--the only true Beach Boy alive. Mike did not write much --he sang.

Free Music Review: Great Compilation, just for the remixes.
Hit: 4 Stars

I've had these songs on Vinyl and CD for years, but I picked this compilation up just for the remixes. Soundwise its one of the best BB comps I have heard. It's a great comp for new Beach Boy fans and fanatics.

But this is further evidence that all session tapes for "Today" and "Summer Days (And Summer Nights!)" exist and can be synched up and remixed into true stereo. I wish someone at Capitol or Brian's staff would do a entire stereo remix of both of these classic 64-65 albums. Even though the songwriting was inconsistent, Brian's production work on both albums was just as brilliant as it was on "Pet Sounds". I've got nothing against the original mono mixes, I would love to hear tracks like "Do You Want To Dance" in true stereo. (besides the sloppy mixes that were on Bootlegs)

Free Music Review: Almost Perfect!
Hit: 4 Stars

Personally speaking, most of my favorite BB songs are included on this extraordinary compilation. It's a nice package to add to your CD collection if you're a Beach Boys fan. Some of their best work is included here. Although, I would have left off 409, Why Do Fools Fall In Love, Then I Kissed Her and California Dreamin' and replaced them with Darlin', Heroes & Villains, I Can Hear Music and the stereo version of Good Vibrations. For me, that would have been the perfect Beach Boys CD. However, this one comes pretty close. Close your eyes, turn it up and let the lush, layered harmonies take you back to a summer past. These guys were arguably the second most important pop music band in history, but sadly enough were and always will be in the Beatles' shadow.
