Free Music Review: beastie boys continue to push the envelope
Hit: 5 Stars

I guess it's human nature but when most people hear someone doing something new, they tend to put it down. Since their beginnings in New York hardcore, the Beasties have taken an original approach to making music. Although their original punk stuff was fairly cookie cutter, their first forays into the world of hip-hop (Cookie Puss) showed a raw creative genius and a willingness to try something new and different. With Licensed to Ill, they entered rap full-on, playing the characters of three girl crazy, beer soaked rebels. I loved the record when it came out and have loved them ever since, but interestingly, Licensed to Ill is my least favorite record of the bunch. With Pauls Boutique, the Beasties took hip-hop to new heights. Working with the Dust Brothers, they exploited the emerging technology of sampling and introduced a whole new hip-hop to the masses. Unfortunately it was a litle too groundbreaking for most and was not a big success when released. I bought it the first day it went on sale (the tape was green! I was so excited!) and as soon as I popped it in, I was hooked. The grooves, the beats, the rhymes... It was by far the best album of the year. But like a said, it wasn't very successful at the time- funny that now everyone seems to be saying it's their favorite Beasties record. They lost most of the jocks who had taken Licensed to Ill's tongue in cheek songlist as a mantra for their fratboy lifestyles, but kept their true fans and gained many new ones.A few years later they dropped Check Your Head and made history again. Now they were hip-hoppers not afraid to be punk (in the beginning they had been punks not afraid to rap) and not afraid to challenge their listeners. Ill Communication held much of the same style but with the refinement that comes with practice. It's funny that when a Beasties song is on- love them or hate them- you know it's the Beasties. Most bands/groups/artists whatever can't say that. In a time where most music is disposable and used more as the wallpaper than the masterpice hanging on the wall, the Beasties released Hello Nasty and brought back the originality that many of today's artists lack. I don't know how many of you make mixed tapes (I make a ton) but that's what this CD is. You've got a full dose of Beasties flavored hip-hop, some latin rythms, funk, jazz, folk and a touch of electronica. It shows depth and creativity like no record I've heard in a while. Although all the songs are great, there are a few standouts: Super Disco Breakin, Putting Shame in Your Game, And Me, I Don't Know, The Negotiation Limerick File and Unite. If you don't like it now, don't worry, you will. In a few years when everyone's records are like this and it becomes the latest trend, you'll say it's the best sh*t you've ever heard. But I'll be laughing as I'm listening to the current Beastie record and seeing into your future.

It's been a dozen years since the Beastie Boys broke, and on Hello Nasty, they show that--though they've grown up, matured, and just gotten older--they're still in touch with the inner brat that always made them so much fun. Turns out that the brat's turned into an ace record collector with choice taste in collaborators, too. --Randy Silver
On their previous album, Ill Communication, the Beastie Boys expanded their parameters yet again, melding cutting-edge hip-hop with slinky jazz, butt-wiggling funk, weepy classical, and combustive punk rock. Four years down the line, the group's music isn't nearly as organic. They've all but abandoned the guitars and returned to the kind of old-school beats and rhythms that defined their groundbreaking 1989 disc, Paul's Boutique. But Hello Nasty isn't a regression, and it's anything but a cop-out: in addition to resurrecting the best elements from their past, the Beastie Boys have embraced the dopest high tech gizmos of the computer age. Hello Nasty gurgles like galactic sulfur pools, whizzes like a Sega game, and slurps and thumps like the best backward Hendrix loops. Add in a cavalcade of Latin percussion, calliope keyboards, and exotic samples (Stravinsky, Stephen Sondheim, Jazz Crusaders, Rachmaninoff), and you're left with one of the most creative and jubilant hip-hop records to date, even if you exclude witty lyrics like, "I'm the king of Boggle / There is none higher / I get 11 points off the word quagmire" ("Putting Shame in Your Game"). To paraphrase über-critic Robert Christgau, Paul's Boutique may have been the band's Pet Sounds, but Hello Nasty is the Beasties' Sgt. Pepper's. --Jon Wiederhorn
