Free Music Review: An Open Letter To The Record Buying Public
Hit: 5 Stars

Long ago I resigned myself to the fact that I would have to listen to Conservatives deride and publicly pillory any artists that don't agree with them. That doesn't, however, make it any less unpleasant to endure. Like a lot of great artists and the works they create, from Picasso to Pink Floyd and Thomas Paine from The White Album to Gulliver's Travels, the Beastie Boys stellar To The 5 Boroughs has a point of view. The last time I checked this was still a free country and the Beastie Boys are still entitled to think, say and publish whatever they want. I for one applaud them for always saying whatever they felt was right. Whether they are fighting for our right to party, freedom in Tibet or championing peace in today's world, The Beastie Boys have never compromised. It takes courage to stand on what you believe and seldom has it been as entertaining as it is on To The 5 Boroughs.

Now, there are those in the record buying public who seem to feel a sense of entitlement, those that feel that the only opinion that matters is their own. They wonder aloud why the rest us can't get it through our thick heads that they are right and start agreeing with them. Witness The Dixie Chicks "boycott" of late. If that is you then some of the more political themes on this album may leave you feeling left out. Too bad because To The 5 Boroughs finds The Beasties at their finest and in rare form; spinning fat, seductive grooves, killer beats and the mischievous lyrical genius they have come to be known for. If on the other hand, you voted for the majority last time out you will love the unabashed liberal bias on this album. And unabashed it should be. While no one loved the party more than I the Beasties are at their best when they are rapping about things that matter. This album matters. It is also unlike any other Beastie Boys album you have heard before. The Beasties have always seemed to understand that in order to have longevity an artist has to keep moving. Like most of my generation when License to Ill hit the airwaves I signed on for the party no questions asked. Albums like Paul's Boutique, Check Your Head and Ill Communication took us a little longer to get into. With each new release the Boys were evolving, experimenting and pushing the limits of what hip-hop could be. The rest of us were just trying to keep up with them and admittedly, loving every minute of it. Sometimes the experiment worked and sometimes it didn't but The Boys kept on challenging us all right into the next millennium. To The 5 Boroughs is no exception. For some time now The Beasties have been promising to release a collection of hip-hop cuts and this time out they delivered. Boy did they ever deliver. In the 70's and 80's New York City gave birth to a whole new scene with its own lyrical delivery, musical styling, creative expression and forms of dance. To The 5 boroughs unfolds like a love letter to the rap and funk roots that gave The Beastie Boys their start some twenty years ago. You can almost feel the rumble of the subway and it's easy to imagine the graffiti artists or break dancers warming up nearby as you listen to this album. Like Ill Communication and Paul's Boutique this album took me some time to get my head around but like those venerable albums it is also destined to become a classic. Stand out cuts here include the infectious break beats of Ch-Check It Out, the old school vibe on Right Right Now Now and Triple Trouble, and the trip hop joint An Open Letter To NYC.

If your politics make you feel squeamish about buying this album I feel your pain, I really do. Of late, the Beastie Boys have publicly held many points of view that would make any self-respecting conservative a little nervous. I'm sympathetic to your plight but I also urge you to remember that good art sometimes pushes us to places that make us uncomfortable.

To those that can't be convinced To The 5 Boroughs is the kind of album that will doubtless inspire some to do things like boycott The Boys. They might even feel compelled to call talk radio shows or start some sort of email campaign to shame them in to behaving themselves and get back towards the middle. If it is important to you that your favorite artists agree with you politically I suppose you could always just go buy a country record. Just don't make it Tim McGraw or The Dixie Chicks, they voted for Clinton.

And finally, for those reviewers who are mean spirited enough to suggest that having a left leaning political point of view will only hurt an artist's bottom line I am happy to report that I just caught The Beastie Boys at a SOLD OUT Long Beach show and their license to ill was still in full effect. God Bless America.
