Free Music Review: ...IT MUST RUN IN THE FAMILY
Hit: 5 Stars

With the release of this fine cd, Bebel Gilberto shows that, while she may have inherited some of her legendary father's musical talent, she is definitely an artist with an individuality and direction all her own. She caresses the words to these songs as only Brazilian practitioners of the samba can do, and, with the help of Belgian keyboard wizard and producer Marc Hollander (founding member of the 70s experimental band Aqsaq Maboul), takes the form into new territory, utilizing -- tastefully -- studio technology and electronic rhythms to gently augment and metamorphasize them into her own unique vision.

The tunes on this disc swing and sway just the way you would expect, but with a slight edge -- and the combination of techniques works very well indeed.

Bebel's voice is alternately soft, sexy, playful and wistful as she works her way through this set of tunes, most of which she had a hand in composing. Her voices -- overdubbing used to really nice effects -- swirl around the listener, pulling them into her world. This music, even while being upbeat in places, is overall very relaxing, but never uninteresting -- there's a lot going on here for the discerning listener to appreciate.

If you're looking for a fresh take on Brazilian samba, give this excellent disc a listen -- I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Free Music Review: The Brazilian "Sade"
Hit: 5 Stars

Finally! An album that puts emphasis on mood, tempo, melodic variations, rhythm, and most of all, an alluring voice for our times. Sade captured the world by storm when she came on the scene in '85, and I hope this talented descendent of one of the pioneers of bossa nova meets a similar fate. I guess it's unfair to compare any newcomer to Sade, but both women demonstrate that it doesn't take vocal bombast to communicate a song's message and moods.

Like Sade, Bebel Gilberto has an alluring, seductive, captivating voice, not to mention a quality that enrages the hormones in any male listener! Unlike Sade, however, Bebel doesn't possess the low, smokey, dusky tone, but then few women nowadays do. Bebel's voice is as clear and refreshing as an April shower on a hot summer's day. Kudos to the producers for providing a highly listenable and entertaining CD. There are derivations of musical influences from Africa, South America, the Caribbean and Latin cultures. The bossa nova makes a welcome return with a slightly different twist almost 40 years after Bebel's famous folks cut the scene. Astrud and Joao must be sitting proud of their daughter. After being bombarded by the likes of Britney, Christina, NSync, etc, it's good to see and hear that substantial music is back and making some noise of its own.

Free Music Review: Serious Make Out Music
Hit: 5 Stars

I've seen Bebel in concert at the El Rey Theater. And let me tell you! She was so amazing! There were all these brazillain girls there too, and they look pretty good. When they played So Nice (Summer Samba) my heart pounded. Everyone in the joint was really into. Anyhow, my old man gave me a Joao Gilberto album to listen to. I was hooked. About a year later I see that she is preforming in town. I don't even know who she is at this point, but I do see the name Gilberto. I find her web site and I listen to a few of her tracks and I was blown away. She does not really have the same sound as her father. She has her own style that is very refreshing. Most of the songs she sings are in portuguese. Considering I don't understand portuguese, I was still very impressed. Her voice is so sensual, and it makes you want start gooving out. I was able to get her CD for $10 at the concert. And she is so cute with her accent when she talks. I'm gonna try to see her again at the Hollywood Bowl this summer. This CD would make a great addition to your collection. She was even on Morning becomes Eclectic. And if Nic Harcourt likes her, then she must be cool. Which in return makes me even more trendy.

Free Music Review: Sweet-throated bossa nova modernizer
Hit: 5 Stars

Bebel is the daughter of bossa nova-meister Joao Gilberto of "Girl from Ipanema" fame, and is a worthy successor to his rich tradition (which he continues today). Rather than imitate him, she has adopted the quiet and contemplative Brazilian bossa nova style to a completely contemporary musical idiom that is as original and exciting as her father's jazz explorations with Stan Getz were a generation ago. As a boundary buster, it should appeal, as the Joao Gilberto-Getz collaboration did, to an audience well beyond aficionados of Brazilian music.

There are slow and moderate-to-fast tempos in "Tanto Tempo", but even the faster-paced songs (which I prefer) are gentle, even seductive and sometimes hypnotic, driven by Bebel's gorgeous voice. My personal favorites are "August Day Song" (#2), "Sem Contencao" (#4), "Alguem" (#6), "Bananeira" (#9) and "Close Your Eyes" (#11). That's a lot of favorites, but that is how good this album is, and every song is a winner. Most are in Portuguese, and written by Bebel. This is her debut album, something she waited until she was past 30 to do. She must have been saving it up. Let's hope there is more where this came from.

Free Music Review: The Easiest 5-Star Review I've Ever Written.
Hit: 5 Stars

Beautiful (and still single) Brazilian chanteuse, Bebel Gilberto (1966), is the daughter of João Gilberto and singer Miúcha. Produced by Suba, the multi-talented São Paulo electronica producer (who actually died while rescuing this recording material from a fire), Bebel's 2000 U.S. debut album Tanto Tempo is an intoxicating, haunting fusion of bossa nova, música popular brasileira, samba, and latina pop. (Having defined the genre with his 1964 album, Getz/Gilberto, one can almost hear João Gilberto's genetic influence in these songs.) Inquisitive minds wonder how many babies have been conceived as a result of this sensual recording. The complete album tracklist includes:

1. Samba da Benção 4:45
2. August Day Song 4:37
3. Tanto Tempo 2:58
4. Sem Contençào 3:09
5. Mais Feliz 4:15
6. Alguém 4:03
7. So Nice (Summer Samba) 3:31
8. Lonely 2:23
9. Bananeira 3:25
10. Samba e Amor 3:27
11. Close Your Eyes 4:14
