Free Music Review: Bebel - an unexpected surprise
Hit: 5 Stars

.
As a practitioner of the Latin arts, Bebel Gilberto shines.

I first heard her coming through the stereo one summer's afternoon in a small wine bar overlooking the bay.

There's something about the beach, summer and Latin music - it's as though they are part of the same sensuous experience. I had never heard of Bebel Gilberto before (although I knew of her famous father) but I was hooked.

On Tanto Tempo, she recasts the spell of a bygone era with simplicity, elegance and style.

She rediscovers and reinterprets her Brazilian roots with freshness and a new millennium feel.

But yet there's also something familiar and reassuring here - the samba of the 60s with its gentle, romantic nuances and its soft Latin undercurrents.

Tanto Tempo proves that sometimes the more things change the more they remain the same.

FIVE STARS for this beautiful and totally unexpected set.

Free Music Review: SENSUOUS BEBEL
Hit: 5 Stars

This is one of the greatest new releases of these years.... What a voice! Wonderful sensuous tunes, especially the bossa-nova songs: "Tanto Tempo" (breathtaking), "Samba da Bençâo" and "Summer Samba"...although everything else is almost perfect, the samba and jazzier grooves as well. This album has such variety in its approach to classic bossa+ much modern tendencies (trip hop....), and reminds me of many people: Astrud Gilberto, Maysà Mattarazzo, and almost everything good that had that wonderful compilation album "Red, Hot + Rio", in which I first heard Bebel singing. From now on Bebel you'll be up there with my favourite girls: Ella, Astrud, Diana Krall, Shirley Horn, Tracy (from Everything but the Girl), Corinne (from Swing Out Sister), Sade, Lisa, Basia et al...you're unique and deserve a place of your own!!

Free Music Review: A marvelously subtle and lovely work
Hit: 5 Stars

Bebel Gilberto is a true child of Brazilian music royalty, and she is keeping the dynasty going in excellent style. Daughter of bossa nova genius Joao Gilberto and Miucha--a fine singer in her own right, though less well known in the United States--and niece of the brilliant, unequalled Chico Buarque, she has inherited an absolutely beautiful voice and superb songwriting ability. Her CD succeeds in marrying the traditional rhythms and hypnotic melodies of bossa nova with a fresh, modern sound, thanks to producer Suba, and guests ranging from Amon Tobin to percussionist extraordinaire Carlinhos Brown. Sung in both English and Portuguese, the music ranges from soft and romantic to high-energy samba to delightfully jazzy. For me, a special treat is her wonderful cover of Chico's gorgeous and sexy "Samba e Amor"--but everything's great.

Free Music Review: The latest musical gift from South America
Hit: 5 Stars

Ms. Gilberto advances the bossa nova sound into the new millenium with her own weavings of past, present and future! This is a debut worthy of extraordinary acclaim and your next purchase, in this person's humble opinion.

I purchased this CD on a whim while in the music store (after remembering a fascinatingly positive review I had seen by accident the previous day). I now own it with the prayer for more to come from the lips and soul of this wonderful singer! Ms. Gilberto's "August Day Song" is hauntingly familiar in style and sound to her reknowned mother Astrud Gilberto. "Tanto Tempo" sings the music and words one can hardly muster at the right moment. The musicians are par excellance!

I could go on, but why? Only your ears can affirm or disagree with what my heart has said in this more lengthy review than I planned.

Free Music Review: great neo bossa nova from a great gene pool
Hit: 5 Stars

this is a great cd to track the evolution of bossa nova and keeping it alive with fusion of new sounds.... and who better than to do it than Gilberto? just to clear some of the reviews up (most of which i completely agree with).... but Bebel is NOT the daughter if Astrud Gilberto, she is the daughter of Joao Gilberto's other wife, Miucha.... who also is a great vocalist and recorded some great bossa nova and MPB... she also came out with a record with her husband and stan getz in america (as Astrud did and is probably best known for in america)... "The best of two worlds"..... this would also make Bebel the niece of famous brazilian musician Chico Buarque and the grand daughter of well-known Brazilian historian Sergio Buarque de Hollanda..... put all of this together and it just keeps on going with Bebel now center stage...
