Free Music Review: one of the best of all time Hit: 5 Starsthis is one of the most beautiful albums of all time.
it came out while i was studying composition at a music conservatory.
we analyzed it in theory.
buy this and savor the lyrics, form, and melody.
Free Music Review: Absolutely Brilliant! Hit: 5 StarsI was a bit hesitant to buy this album, given the Amazon review above. Even listening to the samples, I felt the darkness and gloom of this album, and at the time, it didn't really appeal to me. However, being a huge Beck fan, wanting to collect anything and everything Beck, I eventually received "Sea Change" as a present. Let me tell you, every single song on this album is absolutely brilliant. After a few complete listens, the melodies and lyrics that seemed so dark will permeate in your mind! You'll find yourself going back and listening to it over and over again! If you don't feel like buying a "bummed-out, depressing Beck album" - buy it anyway, because the sheer beauty of the album will outshine any gloom you might initially feel. This is probably my new favorite of all of Beck's albums. If you're a fan of "Mutations" (my former favorite), then you'll love "Sea Change".
Free Music Review: beautiful / sad Hit: 5 StarsThis was my first introduction to Beck (guess I got lucky). What a wonderful CD. I don't really need to add to the 100s of reviews for this CD. But...I will suggest people who like this take a listen to (early) John Martyn. Many reviewers have made the obvious connection between songs on Sea Change and those by Nick Drake, indeed the orchestration on several songs is obviously derived from Drake. But...John Martyn worked with Drake, was his friend and recorded with the same producers (early Island Records). If you love Sea Change listen to John Martyn's Solid Air (the song of the album's title is writen about the then dead Nick Drake) ...and for the ultimate break-up album "Grace & Danger". This album has songs of such intensity Martyn's record company refused (initially) to let him release it. It was ultimately released when produced by Phil Collins (yeah we won't go there), who'd also recently separated from his wife.
Free Music Review: Musical Nirvana...... Genius! Hit: 5 StarsI remember the first day I had heard this album. And at first, I didn't even know I was listening to Beck, let alone a new album. I had gotten to work after my chef had arrived. It was a really small kitchen so chef and I were working right next to each other. After I had started my prep list, I began to take notice to what was on the stereo. After maybe the third song, I asked my Chef, "what is this?" He said it was Beck's new cd called "Sea Change." At first it sounded nothing like Beck to me. But I had kind of fallen off the Beck "wagon." I remember going to see him live on NCSU Campus, when Atari Teenage Riot opened for him. This was just after "Odelay" came out. I was in middle school around the time "Mellow Gold" was released. Anyways, Sea change was such a departure from those albums, so I decided to investigate his other releases, like "Midnite Vultures", and "Mutations"(which is my favorite beck album). After listening to thos albums I began to see where he was going. This album, Is musical genius in my opinion, or at least this a beautifully produced album by a musical genius. It just shows that Beck can do just about anything with any style of music he wants, and it just works.... wonderfully. I think this is one of those albums that I will never tire of. I would have paid three times what I paid for it and still feel like it was money well spent. If you haven't bought it yet and are a Beck fan, do yourself a favor.
