Free Music Review: The Best Bee Gees Collection
Hit: 5 Stars

I can remember a time in my youth when it wasn't very hip to like the Bee Gees (I realize this dates me a little bit). But times have changed, and the Bee Gees are now being appreciated and recognized as one of the premier pop acts of all time. This collection does an excellent job of covering the career of the Bee Gees, from their beginnings as a Beatle-esque act in 1967 (Massachusetts, Lonely Days) through their born again disco phase in the mid to late 1970s (Jive Talkin', Stayin' Alive, Night Fever, Tragedy), to the pop songs they wrote for others in the 1980s (Heartbreaker, Guilty, Islands in the Stream).

The collection comes across as a bit didactic, as everything is in chronological order. But is that such a bad thing? I love having a piece of pop history on these two cds, and I highly recommend this set.

Free Music Review: One of the Big Five for sure!
Hit: 5 Stars

At the time I had the vinyl 'Best of's Vol 1 & 2. For better or worse I am really not into vinyls anymore, so I have replaced them with this 2CD set. And for me it gets 5 stars for one simple reason: every Bee Gees song I ever knew and loved is here, plus a whole lot more which I simply regard as bonus tracks. And on HDCD too - what a treat! The packaging artwork is also quaint, recalling the peculiar tastelessness of the early album covers. The sleeve notes are informative, brief and dense - the music speaks for itself (have you noticed how much longer sleeve notes tend to be on lesser artists' albums?). All those wonderful memories come flooding back. These guys were surely the masters of the popular song, churning out one winner after another for decades. How many artists, in any musical genre, have managed this?

Free Music Review: Excellent!
Hit: 5 Stars

What can I say? They are the Bee Gees afterall. Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb have been making great music for five decades and they are still a force in the music business in the 21st century. Although Maurice left us way too soon, I know that Barry and Robin will still continue to write great music for themselves and others. Barry Gibb is not just a song writer he is a poet. His lyrics make sense and they touch your heart. When most think of the Bee Gees they think Disco and Saturday Night Fever...how wrong they are just to limit this dynamic group to that era. I am only 38 years old and it wasn't until I turned 30 that I truly discovered who this group was and what they had done. They have forever changed the landscape of music. In one word, the Brothers Gibb are amazing.

Free Music Review: A Great body of work
Hit: 5 Stars

I am so very happy with this double CD. It has almost all of their greatest hits altogether in one package. As you listen to the progression you can hear how much the Bee Gees have influenced so many musical styles and artists over the years. I enjoyed their original versions of their songs, particularly "Islands in the stream" such a great song. I would highly recomend this album to any fan of the group and to anyone looking for good quality music. Sometimes I have bought just on a whim looking for hidden gems that no longer have the attention of the industry. So much of the current popular CD's on sale in the stores border on atonal anti music, if not simply a repackaged nursery rhyme of hate that sound like it was made in 15 minutes on a portable casio keyboard.

Free Music Review: Back to the BEE Gees
Hit: 5 Stars

I was never the greatest Bee Gees fan at the height of their popularity in the mid-late seventies, but since acquiring this greatest hits album, I've listened to little else! It is astonishing just how many of these songs bring back such specific memories, emotions, and childhood/adolescent musings. Background music in the car on the way to elementary school. Sweaty Jr. high school dances in the gym. Sunday afternoon in the supermarket. I am particularly fond of Jive Talkin', with it's funky, stacotto intro and up-beat base-line. Really peels away the years! Of course the "golden age" of Bee Gees disco fair is fabulous.
