Free Music Review: Still Is Too Much Heaven
Hit: 4 Stars

The music of the 70's really still captures so many memories of bell bottoms, Funk groups like The Commodores, and also some of the best guilty pleasures in great music from Elton John, James Taylor and especially The Bee Gees. Since they came out in the 60's, the groups has been one of the very few groups whose music still remains as universal and delightful as it was released years ago. Sadly, the group took a huge blow a few years ago with the heartbreaking death of Maurice Gibb. Recently, the music also took a big surprise as well. The groups catalog was moved from Universal and Polydor Records, to Warner Brothers label Reprise. Their hits have still remained to be as one.

The 2006 reissuing of The Bee Gees Their Greatest Hits: The Record is the same as it was released five years ago. The collection consists of 40 delightful tunes the Gibb Brothers made famous as singers, and songwriters. The collection deliver very well on not just their own songs, but songs that they've recorded for the first time that were written for others performers like Celine Dion (Immortality) and Samantha Sang (Emotions). Aside from the new tracks, the collection includes a lot of their great classics like How Deep Is Your Love, Alone, One, Nights On Broadway, The #1 smash Stayin' Alive, Too Much Heaven, the gritty and groovy Jive Talkin', and How Can You Mend A Broken Heart. This reflection of The Bee Gees remains nearly as flawless and delightful and its sound better than ever. Sadly, the album doesn't add any new tracks like their 2004 Man In The Middle which was recorded in memory of Maurice.

All in all, The Bee Gees Their Greatest Hits: The Record is a absolutely delightful record, and a near perfectional definitive reflection of one of the best guilty pleasure groups of all time. If you've purchased the 2001 edition, from when it was released on Universal, there is no need to buy it. But if you've haven't experienced the Gibb sound, than this is the right record for you.

Free Music Review: As Complete A Greatest Hits Compilation As You're Apt To Get
Hit: 4 Stars

The Bee Gees, inducted as a group into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1997, were one of those acts with little middle ground insofar as music fans were concerned: they were either loved or were reviled.

One thing is certain though, as both songwriters and performers they knew what the masses liked in their heyday, which ran from mid-1967 to 1979, putting 34 songs into the North American Billboard Pop Hot 100, with eight cross-overs to the R&B and 17 to the Adult Contemporary (AC) charts in that period, in addition to three more that made only the AC charts or the Hot 100 "Bubble Under" listings. They even managed to get one onto the Country charts (1978's Rest Your Love On Me. a # 39 Country as the flip of the # 1 Hot 100 Too Much Heaven - unfortunately, that B-side is not here).

After 1979 they added another nine to the Hot 100 from 1981 to 1997, one more R&B cross-over in 1983, and 10 more AC entries, including three that made only those charts or the "Bubble Under" list.

Here you get, with excellent sound reproduction, 23 of those Hot 100 hits registered between 1967 and 1979, three (tracks 12, 13 and 16 on Disc 2 that charted in 1987, 1989 and 1997) and one featuring Barbra Streisand and Barry Gibb from 1980. In terms of the "best" in the period covered this fills the bill as nine were # 1 Hot 100 hits and, with one exception (Don't Forget To Remember which was a # 73 Hot 100 in 1969), all the rest were Top 40.

Significant missing hits, and perhaps better selections in place of the several album cuts and failed North American singles included, are: My World - a # 16 Hot 100 /# 19 AC in 1972); Alive (a # 20 AC/# 34 Hot 100 in late 1972/early 1973); Boogie Child (# 12 Hot 100 in 1977); and Edge Of The Universe (# 26 Hot 100/# 43 AC in 1977).

The insert contains brief liner notes and several more photos of the brothers at various stages of their lives, but no proper discography in terms of label/album details and chart performances.

I'm going to rate this CD based on a $1 per song cost to total cost for the entire CD (Apple and Rhapsody charge $1 per song).
I don't like the "Bee Gees" as a group. However, I do have to admit that a lot of their songs are imbedded in my mind due to TV, radio and even the occasional movie (Saturday Night Fever). The following songs are worth owning because they are a part of our cultural history and to be honest, they are just plain good (I'm not sure how Barry got away with singing like a girl, but so be it): Disc 1: Tracks 2,15,16 & 21. Disc 2: Tracks 1,2,3,4,5,6 & 7. So that's $11 worth of music for $15. The Bee Gee's songs aren't available on iTunes or Rhapsody yet, so it's up to you if you want to part with an additional $4 to get the whole CD. If you are going to buy a Greatest Hits compilation from the Bee Gees, this is the one to get.
Note: Don't forget about the three songs sung by brother Andy Gibb. "I Just Want To Be Your Everything", "Our Love (Don't Throw It All Away)", and "Shadow Dancer". Each of them are available on iTunes for a buck a piece.
Note - The song "Emotion" on Disc 2, one of their best songs, is a remix. How lame.
Hope this helps.

This is the best collection of Bee Gees hits available; it spans the entire career of a band that known to millions. Myself, my favorite period was the earliest one where they were recognized as great balladeers. Favorite songs include: "To Love Somebody", "I Gotta Get a Message to You", "I Started a Joke", "First of May", "Words", "Lonely Days", "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart", "Run to Me", "Nights on Broadway", "love So Right", "Stayin' Alive" & "This Is Where I Came In".

These guys manage to reinvent themselves a couple of times; once inventing a genre of music (disco) & then putting themselves back in the mainstream. Versatile writers, one & all, their music is timeless. The Bee Gees were excellent songwriters, expert craftsman when it came to melodies. So many of their songs seemed to be instantly recognizable, even if it were the first time you ever heard them. This is a sign of great songwriting. So many of their songs are classic; do yourself a favor & pick this one up.
