Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827): Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61. Felix Mendelssohn (1809 - 1847): Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64. Performed by Jascha Heifetz, violin, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, dir. Charles Munch. Recorded at Symphony Hall, Chicago, in November 1955 (Beethoven) and February 1959 (Mendelssohn). This edition released in 1998 als RCA Victor 09026 68980 2. Total playing time: 61'54".
Even those of us who prefer "period" instruments and "historically informed performance practice" will continue to be challenged by these 50 year old recordings by Jascha Heifetz, who was not only one of the 20th century's leading violin virtuosos, but also a perfectionist who revelled in getting the minutest details right. He recorded Beethoven's famous Violin Concerto twice, this RCA CD being the later, stereophonic version whose sound is so far superior to that of the 1939 mono version that, whatever a comparison of his playing on both might yield, this one is the obvious choice. The lush, rich sound of both Heifetz and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra has been beautifully captured (and restored), and I found myself actually agreeing with RCA's somewhat over-the-top marketing description of the whole as "orthophonic" - right-sounding; there is very little extraneous noise or hissing, but a glorious fullness of sound that enables one to hear all the lovely detail. Heifetz plays his own version of Auer's cadenzas, all with not only accuracy but with zest and delicacy, making this the best non-period performance I have ever heard. The Mendelssohn Concerto starts out at a cracking pace, Heifetz and Munch obviously being determined to do the "molto appassionato" justice. This is a thrilling version which can make you want to listen over and over again - the Allegro molto vivace at the end of the third movement is, I think, the best I have ever heard. Here, too, there is "HIPP" competition (Beethoven, Mendelssohn: Violin Concertos), but whatever one's preferences, there can be no denying Heifetz's incredible musicality combined with his dazzling virtuosity and, in the slow movement, winsome lyricism. This is a standard classic recording!
