This CD was introduced to me by my mother who used to bore me to death with her classical records of all shape and size when I was a child. She loved it. So I tried it. I love it, my kids love it, my husband loves it. I am not a lover of most classical music. I like music that I can sing along to. My kids wouldn't have stood a chance at knowing these classics if not for this CD. Now they recognize the pieces in movie soundtracks, elevators, department stores, WITHOUT the lyrics. Luckily this CD is entertaining for adults too, because since we received it, I have had to play it over and over because my children love it so much. The words are crafted in a way that they will actually know the composer and the name of most pieces. And the fact that after all of the pieces, they have recorded the "normal" versions - without words - makes it more valuable, so that the children know how the pieces really sound.
I got a second CD of this so that I can have it in the car as well as one at home. I am about to buy volume 2.

What a refreshing change from the typical classical music collections aimed at kids! Beethoven's Wig actually gives kids and their parents something to sing along to while listening to great works by Beethoven, Bach, Mozart and others. The catchy lyrics give information about either the composer, the piece's title/theme or both, but without being dull or "preachy." Having the instrumental-only versions of the songs in the second half of the CD gives everyone the opportunity to just listen or try to remember the words from the first half and sing. I saw this while browsing my recommended Classical Music in Amazon.com and decided to take a look. The idea was intriguing: a dubbed over CD of Beethoven classics with funny lyrics. At first, I thought the joys of classical music (of which I've long enjoyed in its pure form) would be recognized by a younger audience being duped by modern trash such as 50 Cent, Nelly, and other rap artists. I soon realized my hopes were far from being recognized.
Mere seconds into listening to the PREVIEWS of this CD, I became irritated with the voice of John Joyce and Elin Carlson. Within ten minutes, I was reduced to pulling my hair out at the injustice done here. The Beethoven in the music has been shunted to the back, replaced with this unnaturally annoying series of attempted humor-fests. I state with great passion this is the worst attempt to introduce classical music to a younger audience, ever. My rating is only a shadowy reminder that this could have been a good plan.
I give a final word to those parents who want their children to listen to the real classics. Start them out early. Buy a Children's Mozart CD (there are a few on this site alone) and begin to play it while they are young. Do not introduce rap or even rock to them until they recognize the joys of classics. That's the exact method my parents had with me, and I've learned to love not just classical, but a variety of music from the ages. I end with a final warning not to buy this joke.
