I have nothing against the musicians, two of my favorites- though Chick has been in a stylistic rut for some years. Problem is, the combination of acoustic piano- hammered strings and very dynamic- and the pluck of the banjo just doesn't work. The piano simply overwhelms the stringed instrument. Consider that the pianist can play- or bang- ten notes at once, and with pedal he can keep sustaining and banging chords until the cows come home. Of course Mr. Corea is sensitive to that fact, it's just just that you're pitting a heavyweight against a flyweight. Often- and I have a very revealing audio system- the banjo tones sound like an artifact of the piano sound. Perhaps the only fix would be to separate the instruments respectively into the right and left stereo channels. Mr. Fleck has constantly sought to expand the humble banjo's possibilities, and he's played with any number of "world" musicians (I wouldn't be surprised if his next work were Bela Fleck and the Highland Pipers). The banjo, which evolved from the kora brought here by African slaves, fits in fine. Can't blame Bela for trying, but you can't win them all. If only he had chosen to duet with Chick Corea's longtime collaborator, vibist Gary Burton, with Chick lending support on the Fender Rhodes electric piano. Maybe next time.
