Free Music Review: Outbound is unbound
Hit: 5 Stars

This is the biggest album the Flecktones have released. It is sonically huge, with layer upon layer of instrumentation, vocal stylings, and a wide array of other sounds all stitched together masterfully by Bela (who produced Outbound). It is demographically huge, with special guests aplenty. Shawn Colvin makes an unexpected appearance on 4 tracks, and her unique and instantly-identifyable voice somehow fits into the Flecktone's audio collage. And if the endless comparisons to the Dave Matthews Band continue, Outbound might be economically huge as well, as scores of visor-clad youngsters discover the wonderful world of double saxophone solos, synthaxe drumitars, and cosmic hippos.

Outbound answers some of the great unresolved issues of our time. Yes, there still is beauty in art. Yes, you can have tuvan throat singing and a Swiss Army guitar in the same song. And yes, Vic Wooten does get paid by the note (and hence is filthy rich). But most of all, Outbound confirms the Flecktones location in the music world, in that rare and special intersection where virtuosity, creativity, and a good old fashioned sense of humor converge.

Free Music Review: Some fantastic work from and awesome band
Hit: 5 Stars

This ranks among the best of the Flecktones' work. The whole CD has a very fresh, relaxed, and mellow feel to it. It always puts me in a good mood. and it's great for when you're driving.

Hoedown is a great folksy tune that kicks the CD off to a lively start. A Moment So Close is a beautiful tune with some great solo work. It has more of a pop sound than most of their other work, but they pull it off nicely with their great musicianship. Earth Jam is my favorite track. It's such a great jam tune and the solos are spectacular. Being a bass player, I especially like Vic's solo. He starts by singing what he's playing in his solo, and then he sings words to compliment his solo in a playful, funny way. Very enjoyable to listen to. Outboud is also well done, and Scratch and Sniff is a great funky song. Shuba Yatra is another of my favorites on the CD. I love how these gusy pull from so many foreign influences. It's very sophisticated and really adds to the depth of their music.

I'm a huge fan of this album, and you should all run out and get it as soon as possible.

Free Music Review: Excellent... unique combo, wonderful result!
Hit: 5 Stars

This CD was a gift to me and I have to admit that at first I was slightly repulsed. When you take a look at the band... it is made up of instruments ranging from oboe, to banjo, to steel drums! It's a very unique combination and I couldn't imagine it making music.

Alas, it does... and very well! Each track is unique and no space was wasted. There are no "filler" tracks, it's all wonderful. There is also no way to simply pick one song and listen to it. The CD is like a concert which you listen to from beginning to end, and every song is perfectly placed.

I'd also recommend some other artists, David Benoit has an album (American Landscape) with a song that is essentially a race between Benoit on piano and Fleck on Banjo. I was introduced to Benoit by an interview I read at a website... and he is an exceptional artist as well.

I hope this review will encourage you to try something different, because I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

Free Music Review: Outward and upward..
Hit: 5 Stars

It's been an interesting time for Bela and the boys lately. Quite an apt title, Outbound - this doesn't sound like a band's tenth album. It seems more like a beginning. They've got a new label and with new Flecktone Jeff Coffin on board they're reaching farther than ever.

"Scratch n Sniff" is bizarre jungle funk given the bluegrass treatment. The title track sounds as if they'd decided to listen to Weather Report for a week straight. "Something She Said" wordlessly floats on Shawn Colvin's wonderful voice; indeed, lyrics would probably only get in the way of this one. As if their own jambalaya stew of styles wasn't enough, the contributions of several guests from Colvin to Adrian Belew to Jon Anderson are tossed in for even more flavor. Though there are some evident influences (as always), Outbound is ample indication that this group is still full of energy and ready to explore whatever strange musical paths they find.

Free Music Review: Musicianship at it's best
Hit: 5 Stars

Ladies and Gentlemen...save a few bucks and buy this cd now! My friends, this was the cd that changed me from a Metallica fan to a Flecktones fan, it's that good. (Yes I'm serious) As a bass player, I have all but idolized Victor Wooten, and the compositional virtuosity of Bela Fleck is outstanding, as are the solos of Jeff Coffin and the vocals/drumming of Futureman.

The extra musicians here do not drown out the flecktones at all. If you are complaining that you can't hear the banjo or the bass, maybe that is what's meant to happen. It forces you to become a better listener of music, if you can abandon your desires for a blazingly fast solo and learn to appreciate a simply beautiful song like "Zona Mona" or "Shuba Yatra." There's a reason this album won a grammy, and I have a feeling that had a lot to do with the extra musicians and how Bela could pull it all together.
