Free Music Notes for OutboundFree Music Review: Who are these guys, & what have they done w the Flecktones? Hit: 4 Stars
Don't get me wrong, I like this album, on the whole. That's why I gave it 4 stars. But where is Vic? Heck, where's Bela? They are so far submerged under layers & layers of sound, you can barely pick them out. Guests outnumber Flecktones on something like 11 of 16 tracks. Bela only plays banjo on 10. Victor is almost impossible to find in the mix. Still, Scratch & Sniff is great funk; Hoedown is a wild ride; Zona Mona is a fine tune; & A Moment So Clear is an incredible mix of sounds & textures. But this band has become Jeff Coffin, Roy Wooten aka FutureMan aka Royel, and guests, including Bela Fleck, Victor Wooten, & many more. I'm looking forward to seeing them live again, where I hope Bela & Vic don't get swallowed up in the mix. Bela has always been the least egotistical, most generous of frontmen, but as a longtime fan (2o years), I am having a hard time getting used to the overproduced wall of sound.
Free Music Review: Please don't sing.... just play Hit: 4 Stars
Lke many recruits to the legion of Bela Fleck fans, I was seduced by Live Art which must rate as one of the best live albums ever released. This album lacks the spontaneity of Live Art, but does not dissapoint for it's richness and variety of influences and sounds. Bela has brought in a large number of guests for this one, but Bela and Victor shine through and you will be left in no doubt that you are listening to a Flecktones cd.... no-one plays like these guys. One suggestion I must make to Mr Fleck, is that he should try to avoid including Flecktones tracks with vocals, as they invariably suck. Just play guys... that is after all what you are the best in the world at. Well worth buying if you like the Flecktones. If you are new to these guys, shell out the extra sheckles for the Live Art double CD, fall in love with it, and then buy this one.
Free Music Review: wont disappoint Hit: 4 Stars
for me, listening to a flecktones cd can only be enjoyable if i am completely concentrated on the music, or if it serves as background music when i am busy doing something else. that is when i appreciate it most. I have now listened to Outbound in both circumstances and find it can be relaxing and intense. as usual the musicianship is wonderful. there are guests galore on this album, maybe too many. the vocals of shawn covlin do not match particularly well with the music, dave matthews had more of a fit on Left of a Cool. However, any time Jon Mediski is involved in an instrumental situation it can not do anything but help. He plays the B3 organ on this one to create some strange and entertaining sounds. i would recommend this album to any fan of the band
Free Music Review: Béla Fleck & The Flecktones Hit: 4 Stars
"Outbound" contains almost eclectic tracks, with "A Moment So Close" and "Zona Mona" appearing back to back. For more catchy vocals, including all the instrumentals expected, try "A Moment So Close" or "Something She Said." For that awesome banjo without a hint of bluegrass, as well as so many other instruments, try "Zona Mona," and "Shuba Yatra." I feel like a lot of this music is on the edge of being boring, yet somehow it's not. Sometimes it sounds like a fun jam session, and other times it sounds like the film score to a Kathleen Turner film. Either way, I'm a fan and you should be too. Pick up a copy and you'll see why.
Free Music Review: Not Their Best Hit: 4 Stars
I really love the flecktones other work, but this really didn'tdo that much for me. My favorites are the really engaging, melodic pieces, and I don't hear much of that on this album. ... Obviously, the band is going to evolve and change it's sound, and I'm all for that, but the result is that not everybody will like everything. ... The one exception to all this is the first tune, Copland's "Hoedown". This is absolutly amazing, but nothing else on the record comes even remotly close. That one track is why I gave it 4 instead of 3. I like it, but it dosen't totally blow me away like so much of their other stuff [...] .
