Free Music Review: This is the best of music today....
Hit: 5 Stars

I have been buying Bela Fleck and the Flecktone CDs since they were introduced to me a few years back. My cousin got me the first one, Live Art, which many people know is some of the best music you can find today. Since then I bought all the rest of their CDs.

When I first looked at the CD tracks for their newest release, Live at the Quick, I was turned off to see that only 3 songs were new, and the rest were repeats from Live Art and Outbound. I bought it anyway. That night I listened to it for 2 hours straight, re-listening to my favorite tracks. I found out that with this kind of music, no 2 concerts are alike, even if the songs are the same. All the solos had changed, and there were new guest artists. Congar ol'Ondar never ceases to amaze me with his incredible vocal talent. Neither does Bela Fleck for that matter. This CD blew me away, and I think is one of the best, up there with Live Art.

So if you buy one CD, buy Live Art, but if you can buy two CDs, buy Live Art and Live at the Quick!

Free Music Review: Underappreciated Musical Genius
Hit: 5 Stars

I was first introduced to Bela Fleck as a frequent musical guest with the Dave Matthews Band. When I searched for music by the Flecktones, I was immediately taken by the group's amazing ability to improv during songs.

Live at the Quick has many great examples of that rare gift, especially in Vic Wooten's Improv and Amazing Grace, Big Country, A Moment So Close, and the final number, Hoedown (a cover of Aaron Copeland's American Masterpiece). In addition to the CD, I recommend the DVD, becase it has an encore with Congar Ol'Ondar performing a really light number, A Shu Dekio (another awesome improv piece). There's also a bonus number, a cover of Benny Goodman's Breakfast Feud (again, amazing improv).

The guests for this show were awesome, each contributing more to the music than can be imagined, fully rounding out a quartet that was amazing to begin with. If you only buy one CD of music by Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, this should be it.

Free Music Review: The Flecktones Never Fail!
Hit: 5 Stars

Bela Fleck is quite possibly the greatest musician on earth. He is simply an amazing composer and instrumentalist. And of course there is the Flecktones: Victor Lemonte Wooten, an astonishingly gifted bass player, Jeff Coffin, a creative and techinical saxophonist, and Futureman (Roy-el Wooten) the "drummer". Put these guys on stage along with some great guest musicians and you have a real treat to listen to. Each track on "Live at the Quick" keeps your toes tapping and your face smiling. Highlights include: That Old Thing > Earth Jam, Scratch and Sniff, Big Country, and A Moment So Close. Actually they are all great tracks. Do yourself a favor and pick up this disc! Any fan of music will appreciate it, and any Bela Fleck fan will love it!

Free Music Review: Great representation of a Live Flecktones experience
Hit: 5 Stars

If you have never been to a Flecktones concert in person than I pity your soul. What's wrong with you?! If you have a valid excuse or if you have gone to a show before and want to revisit those amazing chills that ran down your spine, then BUY THIS ALBUM. Us Flecktones fans lucked out because this is a concert with such an amazing collection of special guests who are all masters at their respected instruments. From the throat singer to the steel drums, almost every genre of the musical spectrum is covered and organized in a heavenly manner. Don't forget to buy the accompanying DVD which contains every song on the CD plus great band stories and info. What ... are you waiting for? Go get it.

Free Music Review: Improvisation at its Best
Hit: 5 Stars

`Live at the Quick' is a snapshot taken of a band with all pistons firing. While most people wouldn't necessarily think of a banjo as an explosive instrument, Bela Fleck makes it so. Of course, he can also make it sound so delicate that you think it might just collapse in his hands. The same can be said for the virtuoso bass playing of Victor Wooten, quite possibly the most gifted musician I have ever heard play live (Fleck is another contender). This is a terrific addition to any music collection, particularly if you are interested in improvisation and modern variations on traditional music.
