Free Music Notes for If You're Feeling SinisterFree Music Review: Incredible. Where have you been? Hit: 5 Stars
This album is the type that will change the type of music you listen to, and that is a compliment. Ten tracks that won't have you banging your head, but rather have you sit back, and smile, and know that music can have both intelligence and feeling. Oddly enough, it is the type of album your parents could enjoy just as much as anyone else. The real highlight of the album for myself is the fourth track, "Like Dylan In The Movies," although I am at a loss to tell you who Dylan is (Bob? What movies was he in? Or McDermott, but I really doubt this Scottish group would know or care who he is), which is one of those songs that you don't just hear, but rather feel, and "Me and the Major," which has a simply awesome (sorry, but it was the only word I could come up with) harmonica solo, which is the only one I have heard in a while that doesn't attempt to rip off John Popper. The songs have a tendancy to sound upbeat, while the lyrics hide a distinct feeling of sadness, which allows this album to be listened to for any mood. I highly reccomend it, and their second album, "The Boy With the Arab Strap," which is as good, if not better. Really nice folky pop.
Free Music Review: Like the cool side of a pillow Hit: 5 Stars
Everytime I think about Belle & Sebastian the scene from High Fidelity always comes into mind; in which Jack Black is welcomed by the cold chill of B&S' "Seymour's stain" from Arab Strap. The funny thing is that this album does the exact opposite for me. It is warm, luscious, and so comfortably mellow. It is a pleasure just to lie in bed all day with the lights dimmed down low and listen to such tracks here as...well all of them. From the quiet whispers of "Stars of Track and field" to the up-beat angst of "Get me away from here I'm Dying" and ending on my personal fave "Judy and the dream of Horses", Sinister is not only B&S' most consistent album but also their most replayable. There is a just a mood to this album that feels so wonderful and refreshing, it is the musical equivalent to the cool side of a pillow. I just want to keep coming back to it and yet I don't wan't to come back too frequently in fear that the coolness will wear off. Nevertheless I can't recommend Sinister enough to people who want a soundtrack to those lazy sunday mornings. It is one of the best albums, not just of the 90s, but of all time.
Top Track: Judy and the Dream of Horses.
Free Music Review: top 3 album of the 90's Hit: 5 Stars
There was a ton of great music written in the 90's. This record is certainly falls into that category. PErsonally, the three best records of the 90's were Hollywood Town Hall by the Jayhawks, The Soft Bulletin by the Flaming Lips, and If You're Feeling Sinister by Belle and Sebastian.
This is a perfect record. Im also amused by folks who claim it's a "rainy day record". I find that to be rather untrue. In fact, I find the record to be more of a suunny road trip record. Why? Well there is alot of stuff going on in the background that when combined with the singers voice create grand moments that are musical versions of rolling landscapes - passing an old oak tree bathed in sunlight, catching the bend of a river underneath a bridge as you pass by, blue skies and fields as far as you can see..... This is all in the world of the stunning instrumentation of these songs.
This record has amazing songs about interesting characters, but it transfers to the larger stage of the world, not just the corner of some room. Grab yourself some coffee or hot chocolate and hit the road with this cd on a beautiful sunny day. You will surely enjoy it.
Free Music Review: esoteric alubm that will make you fall in love with B&S Hit: 5 Stars
experiment with "if you're feeling sinister". i read a review of this album and picked it up because i watched the nickelodeon cartoon "belle and sebastian" when i was little. i liked that TV show when i was little, i like this band even more. one of the great secrets of belle and sebastian's music is that because of the soft voices and gentle music, you don't realize that their lyrics have lines like: "she was into S&M and Bible studies/not everyone's cup of tea she would admit to me" (from the title track). the songs on "if you're feeling sinister album" flow together well-craftedly, this is a good album to listen to all the way through. although "tigermilk" preceeded this album, and several other albums have followed this one, "if you're feeling sinister" is the best first album to chose if you are even remotely considering experimenting with this band. if you like clever and memorable lyrics, quirky Scottish pop that has depth, and bands that have tried and true fans, this album is your ticket to a good music. after all, there's a kafka book on the cover....
Free Music Review: Stuart and The Dream of Riches Hit: 5 Stars
Belle and Sebastian are in many ways a complete original and walking to their own beat. If You're Feeling Sinister is their finest effort and one of the greatest albums of all time. At times silly, absurd, and sad but always gentle and funny. The Stars of Track and Field start it off with Stuart Murdoch's sweet gentle voice singing his stories of youth. Seeing Other People begins in a wonderful beat of something straight off Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang and tells stories of young lust with an always present tongue in cheek mantality. Get Me Away From Here, I'm Dying sounds sad but is one of the most upbeat tracks on the album and the highlight. The title track is grand and The Boy Done Wrong Again weeps in agony in the words "All I wanted was to sing the saddest songs" and this could be one of them. The album always has a certain cool quality in a dorky kind of way but it never grows old and showcases the Scottish band's talent. As they say in Get Me Away, "Play me a song to set me free / Nobody writes them like they used to / So it may as well be me." Thanks B&S.
