Free Music Notes for If You're Feeling SinisterFree Music Review: Stunningly Intricate... maybe too good for Pop Hit: 5 Stars
Belle and Sebastian belong to that rare group of Pop bands who can write AND play well.... without coming off like pretencious wonky PhDs in the process.Almost all of the tracks here display musicianship that deftly layers melody over counter-melody, counter-melody over poly- rhythmic what the... But none of that matters a bit, because every word you hear comes from the heart, not from an existentialist textbook. B & S write aching vignettes too full of ... and vinager to be mistaken for cloying or sentimental fluff, and they carry some very substantial weight. It's not just youthful anger laced in disappointment. These are real people... from the frustrated closet case in "Seeing Other People", the stymied military man in "Me and The Major", to the willfully wistful title heorine of "Judy and the Dream of Horses." And if the title track reminds you more than a little of Simon and Garfunkel's lighter side circa 1965, it's no accident. Like that other seminal Folk/Pop duo, B & S's strongest asset is their ability to present the truth in a light far more beautiful than it ever deserves.
Free Music Review: A great intro to Belle & Sebastian Hit: 5 Stars
I first found out about this group when I heard the song "Stars of track and field" in the 2002 movie "Pumpkin." I immediately liked the song and looked them up. Having been the first album I heard by them, it turned out to be a good choice. While this does not necessarily contain some of my now favorite songs, it is a consistently good album in that there's not really a bad song on the CD. You may find that some songs take more time to to fully appreciate than others. But if you give it a chance you will be rewarded in the end. While their first album "Tigermilk" was good for a debut release, "If You're Feeling Sinister" is when they really got their bearings; just listening to the album this becomes apparent. Most of the songs are the same pace, fairly upbeat and energetic in sound. "Fox in the Snow" and "The Boy Done Wrong Again" are two of the slower more mellow songs on the CD. Though slightly more melancholy in sound, they are equally enjoyable tracks. This CD is a great introduction to Belle & Sebastian and still an old favorite of mine.
Free Music Review: yes! oh yes. Hit: 5 Stars
Unless the thought of any music that isn't loud, fast and aggressive makes you want to kick some twee indie kid to death, Belle and Sebastian are certain to find a place somwhere in your heart. It seems a bit much to say that they're the best band of the nineties, but who else has been so consistently brilliant? And '...Sinister' is the biggest masterpiece of the lot, ten songs in which not one note or word is illjudged, and whose ability to make the listener feel sad, feel happy, laugh, nod seriously and just generally EMOTE is utterly unparalelled. From the incredible opening of 'Stars of Track and Field', a song which still manages to grow on you with the 500th listen, to the bit where the trumpet kicks in on closer 'Judy and The Dream of Horses', it's magic all the way. Add 'Me and the Major' (Dylan covering the Jam, anybody?) and the lyrical glory that is 'Get Me Away From Here, I'm Dying', and, hey, all the rest of the songs, this album is perfect pop, perfect poetry, perfect everything.Oh, and it's also a great hangover cure, by the way.
Free Music Review: The truth about this ablum, a perfect achievement. Hit: 5 Stars
This album is so good, and so brilliant I think I could go on for three pages about how good this album is. People that have written reviews that express very strong feelings and lot's of excitement let me assure you their intent is very sincere because this album is that good. This is a very poppy album, with some raw emotion that comes through in some very infectious melodies. The verses and choruses are so catchy and brilliant that it won't take you long to figure out why this album is so great. There isn't a song on this album that I don't like, but here are the ones I think of the most: 'Stars of Track and Field' is an amazing opener, 'If your feeling sinister' simply beautiful, 'Seeing Other People' catchy as hell, 'Judy and the Dream of Horses' makes me wheep it's so perfect, and 'Fox in the snow' has the same effect on me as 'Blue Velvet' has on Frank in Lynch's Blue Velvet. To sum this all up, this album ranks up there with a great Velvet Underground album, or a classic Dylan record. This album is a perfect achievement.
Free Music Review: If my house was burning down... Hit: 5 Stars
I would clutch this record to me like a baby blanket. Of course B&S are always charming, but this is really it...It is not cute, pleasant or 'nice' (adjectives commonly used in reference to these lovely Scots by condescending detractors), but rather a fabulous, rollicking yet consistent album that sends shivers up and down the spine. The opener 'Stars of track and field' is a stunner. Beautifully evoking so many ghosts of popular culture (think Nick Drake, 'If...', just about every boarding school story...), it begins simply, gorgeously and builds to a devastating climax. And then comes track 2, 'Seeing other people', with that infectious piano riff and more evocative, glorious lyrics. The last track 'Judy and the dream of horses' is just to die for - deceptively light, striking and lingering with the sugar-on-top of fabulously twee recorders. In between there are a thousand moments of lyrical, ecstatic bliss. Buy this sublime record, for it shall melt even the greatest cynic, and make idealistic young dreamers of us all...
