Free Music Notes for I'm Waking Up to UsFree Music Review: Back on form! (as if they'd ever lost it!) Hit: 5 Stars
How can I say how much I love this band? But...I find I always approach their new work with trepidation, what if it's not good enough, not Belle & Sebastian enough? Thankfully this hasn't happened yet, and with this new release I can still rest easy in my bed, for it is as good as any of their stuff, if not on a par with 'If you're feeling Sinister' songs. The first track, 'I'm waking up to us' has the feel of a classic motown song from the 60's, always a winner.. 'I love my Car' is Belle & Sebastian at their most playful, it sounds like they've roped in a Dixie band for the climax, which, in my opinion cannot be bad! The last track'Marx & Engels' is a slowey, thoughtful number..excellent tune and lyrics, as always...and that goes for the whole EP! Will not disappoint old fans, and a great start for any who want to be introduced to the glittery world of Belle & Sebastian
Free Music Review: beautiful, beautiful, beautiful Hit: 5 Stars
b&s never fails to amaze and delight me. their latest ep is simply a gorgeous piece of music. it's rare for me to call a band "beautiful," but the word encapsulates belle and sebastian perfectly. the bittersweet lyricism of stewart murdock, coupled with the wonderful production and instrumentation, make this ep such a wonderful piece of listening. and they have a dixieland band on "i love my car." how can you go wrong?if i have any complaint, it's that there were only three songs on this album. however, it's not the quantity, it's the quality and beauty of each song. the ep will bring you to tears if you allow the music to wrap around your heart. i know it's sappy, but it's the truth. buy this ep. now.
Free Music Review: B&S continue to evolve Hit: 5 Stars
This ep is just magic! Even their worst music (Fold Your Hands....I wasn't too impressed) is light years from anything the mainstream is doing. Every cd is like an adventure for the band as they grow into different sounds and aren't afraid to try their hand at something new. This EP is delightful, upbeat, full of catchy melodies and thick lyrics. B&S have placed a clairnet and banjo among other new instruments into this set, a testament to their willingness to constantly expand. Plus, the music on this cd makes you feel good and happy. B&S have never focused on what makes this world dismal but rather what we should love about it. As sappy as that sounds, we need music like this.
Free Music Review: Great and really fun. Hit: 5 Stars
"I Love My Car" is one of Belle & Sebastian's most fun songs ever. It is an upbeat and kind of goofy song to lighten your spirits. In a day when so much music is depressed, anti-establishment, post-modern, and the list goes on, this track reminds us there is so much more to life than lust, conspiracy, and politics. And I just love the horns! I would buy this album just for this song. It has made my week. The two other tracks are strong, "standard" Belle & Sebastian, and worth the purchase also. Overall a great EP and release by Belle & Sebastian. I understand that these tracks will no appear on the next LP, so fans best pick it up.
Free Music Review: another brilliant single Hit: 5 Stars
And what's so great about them, they remain brilliant though the music has changed a lot since 1996. This one is great again, although it can't beat Jonathan David as song of the year. After having listened to it, I feel a real desire to listen to Village green preservation society and Something else by the Kinks; The first two songs on this single resemble those albums in a way. It's a shame there are only 3 songs on it, but the band made up for that with their terrific peel session last june. I can't wait for a new album...
